Been using Firefox for yonks but lately lots of problems. It's forever 'not responding'. I've un-installed and re-installed about 30 bloody times and it's still screwed. Any one else having issues with it? What's some other good browsers people can recommend. IE sucks.

yes, well unfortunatley i failed to do my research and went out and bought a DG632 modem/router, then realised it is a piece of poo! (Serves me right for listening to my gf and not checking every forum i can find before making a purchase!) once i upgraded the firmware it is running ok, but i think there is something funny in the firewall cause it wont let me open anything associated with hotmail/msn/any email account (uni etc) and is getting a little annoying.

I have a netgear router, and I have some issues where I open ports and forward them, and the program still says I have a frewall blocking the ports. (Windows Firewall is switched off, and I don't have any other software firewalls)
Jeff, for your problem, there is only a few of the more popular ports available to open by default. To add more you have to get in to your router in your browser, then go to Services, then add the service name, TCP/IP or UDP and then the port number. If it is one port number, from and to will be the same, but if it is a range of ports, then that is obvious and I won't bother telling you how to set it up
Hope it all works out.
BTW, when I got my Netgear router, it would drop the network out if there was too much activity. Sometimes I would be playing CS: Source and it would rop out. Once I updated the Firmware I haven't had a problem since. Seems like Netgear don't really test their equipment before they ship it out if you and I have had the same issue...

hmmm i really dont have much of a clue about all these ports and port forwarding etc, i think ill have to get my mate to come and have a look at it. Yeah there is about 12 pages on the netgear forums of people with the exact same problems with the dg632! mine does seem to hold the connection better since i upgraded the firmware, although i havent tried to play any games online yet, but it was fine with downloadign torrents. Thanks for the help.

Jeff, a good program to use when opening ports is "What's running". It tells you what ports a particular program is using, so that you can open them in your router. The program is freeware to I think.
Otherwise, most programs have a web site these days that will have information on what ports need to be opened.

hmm ill have a look for that program then, cheers.

Hotmail and Yahoo! mail, no, but your email and Uni email will most likely work on a POP3 incoming protocol, and SMTP outgoing protocol if you use something like Outlook or Outlook Express to get your emails. They have their own ports that you will need to open to be able to receive them.
Hotmail and Yahoo! mail are just web site email applicatins, so if you can browse the web you should be able to get them. Having said that, you DSL should work a lot faster if you open up Port 80 and port 8080 as they are the HTTP ports (from memory, someone feel free to correct me if I am wrong), and the HTTP port is the one that allows internet through.

Firefox hasnt (touch wood) given me any problems whatsoever. It does see every post in this forum as a link for some wierd reason but that disrupts the use not at all.

I'm on the latest Firefox and Java and my Firefox tends to crash if I view the forum with it. I just use IE, bit of a pain but I'm too lazy to figure out what's causing it. It might even be the skin I'm using or one of the extensions.

Firefox has given me no issues at all. Platforms I use it on are Fedora Core 2 , XP and 2K. MS boxes are latest java but I can't remember if the FC2 linux box is? Linux box is intel other 2 are AMD, also my laptop is intel win XP lates java, also no issues? This is really just stats for Pen so he can say " not my site As for the firewall issues Jeff, generally with these firewalls any internally (from you're end) initiated connection is allowed and all externally initiated connections are rejected. You should not really need to open ports in you're firewall unless you have servers that need to be connected to or some other reason to allow someone to connect to you're PC.

Just as a note for the guys that are losing their bookmarks. When this happens does it whinge to you about creating a new profile by chance?
If so its pretty easy to fix. Do whatever it wants (ie create a new profile), dont bother setting up that profile how you would normally like it. reboot your system then navigate to the firefox profiles folder C:\Documents and Settings\"Name"\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles within that you should have two profiles, the new one that you just created and one that is a random string of letters ie "askjogesg.default" delete the one you just created keeping the random string one. Start firefox as normal. You should be back where you left off with all of your bookmarks in place.
