Hello all...I want a dog. Problems - I live in a two bedroom unit. It has a small courtyard but it is very open to the front of the block and the street and would be quite easy for someone to steal it if left there alone. Therefore it would need to be kept inside most of the time, definitely while I'm at work. Does anyone else here have an indoors dog? How did you go toilet training it and are there any breeds that could be recommended.
All this on the off chance someone here knows about this topic haha.
The last problem is to convince the parents (landlords) and the people in my strata hmmmmm

Get a big lazy dog, they're great for indoors, I have a Great Dane crossed with a pitbull that keeps an eye on my soarer when im at work. No one even comes near the driveway. Lol. He can't have too much exercise because the great danes have small hearts. He looks and sounds mean but he just sleeps all day, great dog if you don't have too much time on your hands. Eats a lot though...

Yeah luke i have come across lots of dogs some toilet trained some not(ugly nite that one) thats why they have been mostly one nite stands. Yeah keep them inside unless they are useless and you want them to move on but dont count on them gettin stolen unless they are also drunk so leavin them out on friday and saturday nites is a good idea to get rid of them..
convincing the parents wont be hard just dont introduce them to your parents or change them on a regular basis that way your parents will think they are another friend.
Hope that helps your problems.

I have a small Bull Mastiff, they are pretty cool, and they protect your shiit!! They rarely get over 225lbs, nice size for 2BR unit. Don't worry about anybody stealing it!!

My mom has a great dane, she craps bigger than me!! That dog can EAT! And I mean ANYTHING she can get ahold of that doesn't eat her first! I know it costs a fortune to maintain "Pascha".

Luke, go for something that doesn't malt/shed hair in copious amounts or you will be forever brushing your black suits! That essentially rules out a lot of small dogs however! ;)
If its going to live predominately indoors it shouldn't matter what breed/size you get, as long as you take it outside for walks regularly.
A poodle crossed with something less showy would be a good mix; You get the wool coat of the poodle and something else of the something else!
Perhaps a poodle cross golden retriever? That way you can take it to the park and throw crap for it and it will be more than happy to bring it back to you! Means less walking when you take it outside! ;)

Luke,
I would recommend a Jack Russell. I have one and she's awesome. She does shed, a lot, but that doesn't bother me much. She gets left at home each day when I go to work and she rarely makes a mess inside. Toilet training has to start from day one though, as does all training. The key is being consistant. Jacks are great little dogs, loads of character and think they're big dogs. There are three types essentially, rough coat, broken coat and smooth coat. Mine's a smooth coat. They vary greatly in how 'big' they will grow but looking at their parents is normally a good indication. They do need to be walked daily, ideally, but they're also happy to be left to their own devices during the day, just get them a few toys to play with or they'll find their own, ie your shoes, socks, ipod headphones, anything that is left within reach. They're very intelligent dogs so they take to training pretty well, but if you don't train them they'll turn into right little bast*rds. They're not yappers by nature.
In terms of your strata, as long as the majority (not all as previously stated) of the owner agree you should be cool. I'd suggest you approach them and that they put into the strata rules that dogs are allowed but must be pre-approved (in terms of breed/size) by the majority, this is what my stata did. That avoids ending up with massive dogs in the group or little yappy lap dogs that will keep everyone awake all night.
Post pics when you get your pup.
Cheers.

If you're after a small dog that sheds no hair, get a 'schnoodle' - a cross between a schnauzer and a poodle. A friend of mine has it, and it's a very easy to maintain dog, very clean too, with shorter hairs and so on. ALthough it's not a pain in the ass energetic kind of a dog, it does need to burn energy, but being small, a small apartment shoudl have enough space for it to run around when you are not there.
Brenton, it depends on each individual strata and its constitution. You'd find there's many strata constitutions out there that require full majority of owners to agree on those things.
