Well tonight down in Mornington I got beckoned over by a cop while having tea, my Soarer is rated over the limit for a P Plater, so I received 3 demerit points and I'm not allowed to drive my Soarer until I'm off my P's, which is in a year. He also picked me up on my P plate not being visible enough, as my back window is tinted and you have to be able to see it from 20 metres away.
So just a warning to anyone around my area in particular, watch out because they are really looking out for P platers with high performance vehicles.

chris that law about p platers driving turbo cars only applies to people who got there license after 1st of july 2007 so if you just got your license then your doomend. The p plate thing that cop was obviously on a roll and was just being a homo..

Thanks guys, but Miles is right. The old law states that if you car is over 125kw per tonne, then you aren't able to drive it on your P's.
If you go to the following link and put the TT's weight in, which is 1600 on my plate in the engine bay, then it calculates to 129kw, just 4 kilowatts more!

Uh Oh.
I live in Mt eliza....i'll probably get done as well.
My car is looking like cop bait lately as well with the 19" chromies and aftermarket headlights.
I'm still on my P's until July. I hope I dont get done for it...its my daily driver. It sucks...because P platers are allowed to drive things like commonwhores....which are powerful enough to kill....and also more unsafe (and there are loads of dickheads hooning around in them)....whereas I dont even drive my car hard and I'm not allowed to drive it.
GOD DAMN!!!!
where did it happen? And was it a marked police car? were you hooning earlier? Did he know straight off that it was over the limit?

go to a weigh bridge Chris and get a dyno print out..when goin to a weigh bridge fill the tank full and get a certificate and adv Vic roads, i took a rosebud cop to court and won regarding a similar issue as a stock or semi stock tt aint no where near 1600kgs.

I wasn't hooning, he stopped near my car at the Mornington Pier in a blue Commodore I think, and sat there for a while, got print outs and everything with the Soarers specifications, took a photo of my plate in the engine bay with the weight on it. My car can't be 1600 now, as it has a towbar, 18" mags on it etc. They don't count "removeable" weight though. Watch out Christian, they just found a supercharged Statesman the other night, that was probably what set them off.
Where is a weigh bride around here Cara? Is your car the 94 TT? I was told the 94's weigh is less than the others... I really need my car, I use it everyday to get to Toorak and back, and I just got a towbar so I can tow my jetski places.
So what happened, the found your car weighed more than what was on the plate? Did they say it's invalid because your car had aftermarket accessories on it? I need to get this fixed asap.

Menzies metals in seaford dont know if they still do it. When i presented the slip to VIC roads they said they have been using weights of the mz20 soarer. My car is a 1991TT and they didnt say anything bout after market accessories. I also had a dyno print out of how much power my vehicle had. hope that helps you mate.

I think Menzies in seaford have shut down... better double check though.
Thanks for the heads up Chris, my back window is tinted too. That's really bad luck, i didn't think they really enforced the power to weight thing, but he musn't have reached his quota for the week.
Gotta love the new restrictions though... can't drive a c class kompressor but its now perfectly legal to drive an s2000.

Thanks Cara and Alex.
I have had my licence for nearly 2 years, I wish I could just get away with one more year. Only thing I can think off is to make it look completely stock and maybe he might not recognise it. I'm so over cops.

Oh and about that list, I said the Soarer wasn't on there when I bought the car, he said it doesn't matter, you need to make further enquiries to make sure it's legal. Grrrrrrr.

OMG, another thread on this?!?
They go on the manufactures stated weight for that particular model and factory claimed flywheel output, so getting your car weighed or having it dynoed won't change the fact that TT or V8 soarer is not legal to drive on P-plates in the eastern states. Ali, SA doesn't have P-plate power/weight restrictions yet either

Ah Victoria the Natzi State, god knows how many fines im gonna cop because the speed camera in Victoria don't give you any notice that there there, unlike NSW where they worn you 3 times that there is a speed camera in position
At least my donation will go to the police christmas party where they can have a few from me *sigh*

Ben, yes they do go by manufacturers specifications but it isn't illegal to drive the v8 soarers (if you had your P's before July07 and its a 31/32).
And yeah it is "another thread on this" because its an issue for us young ones, and we keep getting stuffed around. Plus it will take a couple of threads to make sense of the vic laws alone.
Now they're talking about more restrictions on passengers again... can't wait to be off the P's so that i'm not a risky hoon driver anymore...

That's the way Alex. I think I'm just going to avoid Mornington and keep driving my Soarer, I drive on the Monash everyday so I doubt a cop would even look at me, it was just bad luck I was in Mornington at the time when they cruised past.
I'm so over my P's, this is the first time in nearly 2 years of driving that I've had a run in with the law!
Not that it would affect me, but glad we don't have these restrictions here in WA, although there are times when they would be useful, whenever I see some P plater tool driving a high powered car like an idiot...

I hate Commodore drivers, and yet everyone says what's wrong with a Commodore,
i would prefer a commodore driver over a camary or corolla driver any day.
a commodore driver will cut you off because his been an idiot, but a camary driver or corolla driver will cut you off because they dont look over their shoulders. to me that makes them unsafe and everyone around them.
