Out of the 10 or so mine sites i have worked on in the state i dont know of a single site that has any wireless let alone wifi that covers the entire site.

A mine site isnt the size of a football field, they are typically several hundred hectares of rock and road.
Whats the point of wifi anyway?

With nextG on its way there is no need for wifi, just use your mobile phone!

Weird. Our site (including the actual pits) is fully covered by wi-fi (bar few dead spots in couple of places) so that engineers can use their mine management software etc. anywhere they are.

Yeah i know of one or two mine sites that have a mesh setup, Daniel. Im sure there will be others though.

(Because i know there are trolls around i should probably add that my post above was made only thinking of Rio Titno sites =P )

They use it heavily for training purposes in conjunction with video streaming and shizzle.

I dont know of any BHP or Rio Tinto owned mines that have any broad coverage wifi though; certainly there is none for Rio Tinto mine sites at all as all the management shizzle (Citect mainly, developed by Argyle ;) ) was setup years ago via cabled setups.
