you could just walk to start off with Morgs

I walk at least 5K a day at work, around a huge building site carrying ladders all day long.

I guess I'm running mainly for cardio, As well, I've been told if I run, it'll help me in my gym routine, as I don't do anything below my lovely chest :P

We'll see how we go, it's 24hrs later and my legs aint that bad, and I didn't even stretch much.

Gonna aim for 2-3 15min jogs for the first month or so, then upgrade to the bigger block :P WOW!

haha, thanks Shane.

As I got to 84kg (I'm 175 cm ) I decided that i was to comfortable, too big for my liking. After some research I reduced carb intake (mainly bread and pasta) and increased protein. Started using exercise bike using method Shane explained here. 6 months of 30min x 5 per week at a steady pace and I lost 4 kg.....too slow for me so I changed the way on the bike to 5 min steady warm up then 60 sec sprint, then 2 min at 70% effort, then 60sec sprint, then 2 min...etc etc. for only 25 min per workout.
I was wrecked but after only 3 months I lost 7 kg and my fitness improved 100%
Everyone is different and this method may not suit all but I like the way sprinters look way better then middle and long distance steady pace runners.

Also I turned my daily food intake upside down
I start with big breakfast, big morning tea, huge lunch, then small afternoon tea, then small dinner not later then 6.30 pm.
I also snack through the day on almonds dry fruit, plenty of water and green tea.
Food is fuel, so tank up early so you can use it through the day. Don't fill up just before you go to sleep
Now I'm content at around 74kg

no worries Morgs, wait until tomorrow! I can't remember the technical name, but generally the deep pain doesn't kick in until about 48hrs after initial exercise. (Shane, do you know what I'm on about?)

DOMS - delayed onset muscle soreness...and yep, 48 hours to kick in....but it only happens the first one or two times you do something that your muscles arent accustomed to

Shane, good read, I have a booklet around here somewhere that a mate who was thinking of becoming a personal trainer gave me. It says basically the same things re the excercise rates. Their method of choosing the excercise range was to monitor heart rate based on a formula that took age into account. I found that when riding to work if I stayed below the Cardio rate I would have good energy all day but if I went too hard I would fade within a couple of hours after the excercise. I found the heart rate monitor a good tool for ensuring the excercise didn't waste me for the day and it was easier to make sure I wasn't bludging either. ( althought it stopped working for a while in Maylands due to interference from the HT powerlines overhead... but that's another issue.)

It gets easier mate, personally I never liked running, but I had to, 7.6km 6 days a week after work, then 1 hour of bag and pad work and 1 hour of sparring (mostly State and Aussie champs, throw in an occasional World champ for fun..not.)

A training parter is good if you can get one 'cause if you have a 'slack' day they can talk you into running anyway and you'll be glad they did after it.

It can be boring, you can also get the hero's yelling things at you from passing cars (brave men), headphones is the answer, but they can be annoying also.

Look after your feet and knees mate, buy good shoes, especially when you start running a fare few km's, i'd recommend Asics.

Have fun, good luck with it.

Yeah, I was doing it in 3yo ****ed skateshoes that weren't too tight.

Money is tight at the moment, I'm either going to have to put up with them for a while until I get new ones, or delay the running until I can save more $$$ :-)

Only problem is, whenever I come into some cash endless thought of performance parts wont leave my mind... and I never end up getting the stuff I really need :-) haha.

As in, could afford some shoes tomorrow if I wasn't shelling our near on $1000 for a ****ing torsen :-(

Haha Ivor, thats a good one!

I was 18, 5ft 7" and 54kg (in the "very underweight" category). I ate so much but couldnt put on an ounce.

Then i went to Japan, and i put on 10kg in a year. In the 8yrs since then I have put on 15 more kilos and i managed to get myself into the overweight category :-( (according to the BMI).

So i'm also reading this and planning my excercise routine...

so shane what do you reconmend as a proper diet. I know that you reconmend a carb breakfast and then low-med GI snacks every 3 hours but is there any room for meats??? i thought that you need protein for a healthy lifestyle??

Read the CSIRO well-being diet
www.csiro.au/index.asp?type=division&id=Human%20Nutrition
It is tailored for women but the nutrition principles are pretty much the same for health and weight control in men.

I was the complete Opposite...
In year 12 i was a bit of a fatty boomba...at 183 cm weighing 97kg!!!
I then decided....no way can i keep this up...so I went on strict 'eat from a smaller plate, all healthy' diet with lots and lots of rigorous excercise. I dropped down to about 77kg in just over a year.
I went from being in the overweight category, to almost the underweight one... now with plenty more gym work and muscle building, i am keeping at a healthy 83-4 kg.

I did the heavy training thing for ~4years full on, up every morning at 4:30, trained from 5:30 till 7:30, school at 8, training after school from 3:40 till 5:30.. fun stuff! =P
All this to be in the top rowing crew for the school (which also won the 7 races i was in, after i left the crew they started comming 6th ;) )

Then after the rowing season finished in year 12 that was it for me, and i fluffed up real quick!

I went from being able to train for about 4 hours a day and still maintain good grades to puffing slightly when i go up a couple flights of stairs.. time to exercise again? ;D
