I actually rang a jeweller to buy a wedding ring!! Even though he's not there, its the biggest step Ive taken!!

May I take it that your future MiL does not read Soarer Central, and never, ever will and nor will anyone she remotely knows, now or in the future?

If otherwise you might wish to reappraise your chances of marriage or at least your future relationship with your MiL Alternatively, a mild edit of your post before the time limit might be a sound bit of insurance. You know, low premium and high payoff against improbable but catastrophic events.

Best of luck Aaron!! Regarding the engagement ring, you have two choices, either buy it and take the punt that she'll like it, or once you've asked her to marry you, suggest that you go ring shopping together at the next available opportunity. I got very lucky and had a ring that belonged to my grandmother which I gave to my fiance. She absolutely loves it (and so she should it's huge!) and is constantly showing it off.

Regarding asking the father for his blessing (note, not permission), I did it before I asked my fiance to marry me. I think it works either way.

As for asking, sometimes fish and chips on the beach at sunset can be the biggest romantic thing in the world. As can dinner at a nice restaurant after sending her for a day of pampering at a beauty salon. There as so many choices.
