Friend in the UK is wanting a car. He's under 25 and doesn't want to be paying more in insurance than the car's worth.
Looking for a 2nd hand coupe with plenty of grunt that might be a surprise to other petrol heads.
Any suggestions? Must be standard, not modified.

'He's under 25 and doesn't want to be paying more in insurance than the car's worth.'

That might be difficult if you look at the cheap carp on autotrader.co.uk

Dave, how about something from yesteryear? Like a rx7 or a 260z?

Top Gear always seem to be able to find random cheap oldies as well...? =P

Well when I was a kid (zzzzzzz)a Mini Cooper or Lotus Cortina was the thing, even a Riley 1100 or anything with twin carbs. You where lucky to have any wheels when I was in my teens. A Golf GT was a something to drool over.
Not sure what's available now. A lot of the newish cars in the UK seemed to be French when I was last over there (2000).

Coupe on the cheap in the UK ?- Hands down winner would be the Fiat Coupe.

The 16v turbo version

Decent ones around for about 4k
0-60 mph in 6.5 seconds totally standard.

Front wheel drive unfortunately - but has to be the best handling front wheel drive chassis ever made.
plus it is designed by Pininfarina and looks beautiful in ferrari colours.
If they sold them over here I would have one in each colour!

LOL.. I saw the first pic and thought "hey that looks alright, I'd drive that"

Then the second pictture was a massive anti-climax.

Mmmmm, might need to stay away from anything turbo and not sure about anything Italian (reliability worries but they look nice).

Looks like a Euro version of the Mitsi FTO to me, and I bet the mitsi is much cheaper to run and far more reliable.

I'm not a fan of Mitsi, Matt but it's not for me so I'll pass your suggestion on .

Mazda MX5? Not too grunty, but there is a bit of aftermarket support and would make a good track car.

That fiat was good, from the front but, much like my sister in law, the rear end made me limp.

Well he's gone for a VW Corado, so that's him sorted.
