Interesting point Peter.
My nephew is due for his license real soon.
My brother in-law has only ever considered getting him a ute. Less people in the car, less peer pressure.

I just wonder how the father could lend it to him.

I think THAT is irresponsible.

I kinda wished the wreck was caught on film, not to be rude, but flying 200 feet in the air??? That had to be an awesome, and gruesome, sight!!!

i actually feel sorry for the kid

yes he was being stupid by going to fast but he was doing it on a RUNWAY, you know, the place that top gear does its test runs on cause its safer than a highway?? can you imagine what would of happened if he had tried it on the road?

i actually think that to this kid he was speeding the 'safe' way by going on the runway, and his biggest mistake is in not paying attention to how long it is and thinking he could just turn the car around like in the movies. if he had just slammed on the brakes and kept the car straight they all would of probably survived cause he should of been able to stop the thing, even if it was half way down the slope. a car breaking has a lot more control than a car flipping through the air

its like how most people go to industrial areas in the middle of the night to learn how to do burnouts or drift etc, cause they are big empty roads that if something goes wrong they shouldn't hit anyone.

age is also completely irrelevant here. he'd been driving for 2 years. if a 20yo said they had got one of those cars over here nobody would of batted an eyelid.

and power to weight restrictions dont work. they've got them over east and more kids are dying now than before. why? because in a fast car you learn how to drive properly in a week or you crash and during that week you learn a lot of respect for the car. in a slow car you are always pushing it harder and harder to make it fast but the problem is slow cars aren't made to be driven fast and when things go wrong they go really wrong. the speed limit on the freeway is 100, if you hit a pole at 100 in an excel you'll die, but in a soarer you'll walk away and at no point are you speeding or doing anything illegal

With the greatest respect under the circumstances, every part of that is utter tosh.

Poor kids. Poor father too - he must feel pretty bad that his son died driving his car. I wonder if the kid nicked it, or if Dad gave him the keys. =(

I don't think many of us here at 18 if handed the keys to a 500bhp BMW, wouldn't have tried something stupid in it. We all thought we were immortal at 18, and only thought about the thrill.

The debate goes on about kids and mates in cars.

On the one hand, it increases peer pressure to do silly things, on the other hand allowing others in the car encourages them to do the designated driver thing at parties etc, instead of increasing the chances or more kids driving after drinking.

Perhaps a solution would be to increase the penalty for infringements when you have more kids in the car. That way if you are doing the right thing, then no drama, but if you get caught speeding or whatever and you have more than one other young person in the car, then the penalty doubles or similar.

It wouldn't have helped in this case, but might in some others.

You can't stop it, whatever you do. People will go on being people... if we can take one positive from it, we all got something to banter over for a week or two.

Bring on the next issue... dibs on fuel consumption!
