Before I came to NZ from England I didn't take much notice of Remembrance services (11th Nov), have no knowledge of ANZAC day.
That all changed when I read in the Guinness Book of Records that the two most decorated people were the Queen Mother and Charles Upham. I read some more and discovered how the ANZAC spirit is so strong.
Now every ANZAC Day I feel for you all and the sacrifice made, by the two fledgling countries, so far from their loved ones.
I need to have the tissue box handy every April 25th.
Lest We Forget.

I am sure the Queen Mother fought very bravely for her medals. So fortunate that she survived the occasion.

Over 8700 ANZACs were killed in only 8 months of fighting in Gallipoli.

There are only about 24,000 full time members in today's army.

Would have been a hell of time to serve over there through all the battles and i have nothing but respect for all the ANZAC men and women who helped forge our nation all those years ago.

Kate - Is this the same CAV Serge who was killed in the vehicle roll over in Townsville ? The boys were talking about him today and saying how much of a good bloke he was, Im in the 2nd/14th Light Horse Regiment.

Lest we forget....

Also good to see more attention paid to the battles on the Western Front and the memorial at Villers-Bretonneux where 1200 Anzacs died in one day liberating the town, a feat many describe as the turning point for WW1.

"In WW1, after the 8 months campaign at Gallipoli, Australian Troops entered the trenches of France and Belgium. Three years later over 52,000 were dead."

James, Different man. Serge was an early inspiration for me to change corps. I met him at the Sydney Olympic Games and worked in the same team a couple of years later. He was passionate about his work, led by example and fairly regimental. He was admired and loved because he genuinely cared about the soldiers he worked with. He served for 20 years and discharged at the end of 2007 and became a public servant where we work straight after.
A few weeks ago he came home, collapsed and died at home. His wife found him. He leaves her behind and 3 kids. Just like that, man, he was 3 days shy of his 36th birthday. We are all just blown away by it and it was a very moving funeral service. He didn't die from a round or an IED but he served his country and did the hard yards on operational deployments.
My husband runs ANZAC Day Dawn service at our local pub every year and while he runs two up, I help out by running raffles with all proceeds going to Legacy. Also run the Legacy hat around the two up ring and this year raised $1500. It's such a worthy cause.
Would have been a real hard day for Serge's family yesterday.
Never been posted to 2nd/14th Light Horse Regiment, must be a good feeling to be in a unit with such a unique and rich history.

I just got back from the war memorial service in Villers-Bretenneux, Northern France. Damn talk about the world media being there ! CH7 Perth were there.
Ive got several videos of the dawn service and 90+ photos of the event. I also was able to be part of a tour bus visiting the battle grounds, trenches and craters from the WW1. Full respect to the soldiers vs the Germans !! I dont think any one today could have been brave enough to do what they did. Not to mention the weather conditions and diseases going around at the time.

Kate, That is a sad story indeed and only 36 !! My thoughts are also with his family.

2/14 is a very busy unit with deployments left right and centre (including here in Iraq) but still a great one to apart of no matter what corp you serve. Im a truckie and have loved working with the light horse despite the "Cav Attitude" hehehe

Adam - Brilliant pictures ! That would have been a great experience to check out that place, i plan on making the pilgrimage to "ANZAC's Mecca" in Turkey for one ANZAC day hopefully not too far in the future.
