Hey all, I have just discovered that the rubber boot over the CV joint in the missus' Subaru liberty has a big split in it. (grease/oil from it leaked onto the exhaust and the smell gave it away)

She has been driving it for a week with the smell before I found out what the problem was.

She needs the car for work. Can it continue to be driven and what are the consequences? I've had very little to do with front wheel drives.

Get it to Subaru to get the CV re-booted, will cost bugger all now, but if the grease leaks out, the balls will gring, and the shaft will need replacing.

Cheers mate. I have been searching the net. Seems pretty common on the drivers side inner (the one we've done.) I'll ring around tomorrow and see if I can get it in somewhere.

Otherwise, apparently supercheap sell the boots...maybe I'll have to do it myself after work. Not looking forward to that!

If ou need help with it, fire me a PM, and I am happy to help out, it seems I do everyone else's car's on another forum so why not start here as well lol...

The booty is a pain in the arse more than anything, Assuming you have torn the booty near the axel, you need to remove the axel which has a 22mm (I think) bolt with locking pin, and then the hub slides out, and the shave comes out, then it's a matter of remvoing the old wrecked booty, fitting the new booty and most importantly, filling the booty with grease again.

Then putting everything back together again.

Thanks for the offer Brian.

The missus is going to take the Soarer to Canberra, and I'll keep the Subi here. She has it booked in at a Subi service centre to be fixed. I just don't have the time and I'm a single parent to two boys for 5 days come Thursday(ie I'll get nothing done.)
