I 2nd that. A mate brought a 60" samsung. It lasted 45 mins and it had burnt the health bars on the bottom of the screen. it went away after running the burn remover, but still.. He was sh*tting bricks about it being perminant.
Go LCD. I reciently brought a 42" LCD. Has 2 AV, 2 Component, 1 HDMI (well worth getting for the PS3), VGA input. I'm currently using it as my computer monitor! crystal clear!
Could always buy the 70" Sony LCD.. The retail on one of those is $70k!!!

I recently got a 50" full HD panasonic plasma. NEVER had a problem with burn in from any of the consoles.. Highly recommend. Pioneer is the BEST though..

LCD is far better IMHO. Just look at the number of companies that promote their LCD over their plasma range. Panasonic seem to be the only company who operates the other way.
I used to buy all LG stuff but after a string of poor performing products (TV with know design faults which they will not fix in Australia and a DVD recorder which I've given up repairing on an annual basis) I firmly in the Sony camp.

Definitely go LCD, Plasmas use a lot more power than even a CRT TV, and do still suffer from image burn.
Samsung and Philips are still the technology leaders, so if you have had a good experience with your old Samsung, maybe you should stick with that brand.
Sony have been in the LCD arena, but have lifted their game in the last year.

I use to work in a computer shop. I don't know how it is these days, but a few years back the majority of people that did there own research either decided on Samsung or BenQ, I think BenQ have changed there name since.
One of the big reasons for the popularity of BenQ was there dead pixel policy, I don't know how they deal with it now but it's well worth it to research this as well. Every company should have one, and each have different allowances.
I don't however know if LCDS still have issues with dead pixels, technology is a very fast paced industry. Products become obsolete too quick.
So here's a few basic things to consider. * Resolution * Dead pixel policy/Warranty * Refresh rates/response time (usually measured in miliseconds, the quicker the better especially for games)

We've got a Samsung 81cm LCD, had it for well over a year and it's awesome. Would have gone bigger, but our loungeroom is so small we'd have to sit in the driveway to watch TV properly.
My parents recently lashed out on the new Samsung 50" job and it's amazing.. problem is that movies with uber-special effects look way too fake now, so they'll have to get a Blu-ray player to keep up with the contrast ratio.

Got a 47" Sony Bravia X-Series (LCD) and can not fault it. Great for all your viewing, from Foxtel to normal DVDs to Blu Ray & PS3 and other consoles. Got all your outputs & inputs, and even though we run it through the stereo and don't use them, the TVs own speakers are pretty impressive too. What ever you choose Michael, as long as your happy with it and it fits within your budget

We bought a Sony Bravia LCD recently, after I had researched what was currently considered best in the market in our zone of interest. It meets our requirements easily. I agree with Phillips, Toshiba and Samsung as alternatives. We did not look into the German brands, Grundig and, Loewe.

I have a Philips 32 that I bought about 2 years ago. Its been a fantastic set and I have no complaints other than I could now get something twice the size for less money. At the time it was a toss up between the Philips and the Samsung, and the Philips won because it had more HDMI inputs and had a more classic design over the Samsungs space age look. Otherwise they were technically equivalent. Its only 720p/1080i, 8ms refresh, so its old technology now, but I still love it.
