well right now I am not sounding hot or looking cool as the old girl is off the road for: replace front bushes, broken tailshaft (which has to go to a specialist as it's aftermarket), movement in rear assembly (is that related to the tailshaft?), rear axle oil leak, steering wheel column internally broken (a big job apparently) and fitting the heater controller is a nightmare due to the engine bay setup. Won't get her back until the end of next week. It's moments like these I wonder why I can't just grow up and get a 'sensible' car instead!!!! And then I see one on the road and realise I am just not ready to throw in the towel just yet. Oh well :-)

Ouch. Sounds like trouble. Maybe your shaft was unbalanced or some part of the driveline was at the wrong angle.

What part of your column is broken, the shaft?

Stick with it. Ya gotta have hobbies.

not sure which part of the column is buggared. oh and she needs a new starter motor. Yes, we all have to have hobbies, a mate just suggested I should take up knitting or embroidery. he is so not a car person.

well I got the old girl back on Friday just in time to go to Wakefield park on Sunday, which was a blast :-) Turns out that whoever tinkered with her before should stay the hell away from engines. What got done was, new starter motor, front bushes replaced, new wheel nuts, studs and locking nuts, made up a mounting bracket to go between the front sway bar and chassis, replaced the drag link. The tail shaft had to have a specialist replace the rear uni joint section. On top of that the drive plate was cracked so had to get a new one. Oh my goodness...and the heater controller didn't get done...oh and I need to get an new steering column and a couple of other minor things :-) Apparently they can wait for a little bit. Also took 3 litres of gearbox oil. Was good to get her back though, oh well, she starts first go now so I am pretty rapt...even though my bank balance isn't!!!

what did the prev owner do to the motor?

did they check the pinion angle and crankshaft angle? that can often cause it to chew up the rear uni joint.

starter motor was physically too big which didn't allow it to crank up properly, the front brakes are aftermarket which is fine, but they put the wrong nut (?) stud (?) so they were too tight and I get the feeling he broke the column by using the wheel as a lever to get out as the seats are fairly low. He also just had that backyard tinkerer look about him, you know the one who thinks he (or she) knows everything about cars and just fiddles for the sake of fiddling. Maybe I am being a bit harsh...but anyway. I went to a ute muster on Sat, no trophies and my only claim to fame was that I was in a shootout for Best Holden. The only reason I lost was the other girl and her boyfriend did all the work themselves and I bought mine as is. The ute that won is amazing and it was a total mess when they got it. Great day nonetheless.

oh dear, me thinks me ring gear is gone....nasty sound on start up and in P and R, goes away in D and goes fine and doesn't always do it. Thought it was another broken flexplate, but it is brand spankers, so the ring gear is the next logical step in my numpty mechanical mind :-(

it did when I first turned the key, which it has done in the past but was told that might happen due to the steering column being broken and if it happened to just turn it off and then go again. But then when she does crank over it is a higher pitched metal rattle than the sound when the starter motor gets 'stuck'. makes more of a grating sound when changing from P to R. It might be totally related to the steering column I guess, but will find out probably on Monday after she goes to see Doc. My noise description is more than likely fairly dismal so prob wont help you that much.

Hey Miles, Turns out it was operator error (AKA me). Something about the way I was turning the key too far and it was causing the trouble. Hasn't missed a beat since Sat. Oh well initial embarrassment is now over.
