Hi guys I was wondering if you could help me and shed some light on a car buying situation.

I am looking to buy a second daily driver car that I can use for work to hold DJ equipment.

I have come across a 2001 Corolla Ascent for $6000 that has been in a smash front and rear. The guy is a wrecker and it has been fixed up but the panel between bonnet and grill is slightly out and between the liftback boot and rear bumper. Also the dash reads 88000kms but their is a dead bug in the dash between display and clear plastic. Is this a sign of swapping in a dash because I cant understand how this would get there any other way? The seller also tells me that I can see photos of the crash from the dpi if I am interested. Is this true?

Would this be something I should steer clear away from or does it sound ok? Sorry for my newbieish when it comes to buying cars and thanks for your help

I would never buy a car that's obviously been in a crash. Not for that much $ anyway.

ask to see the pics, if it wasnt a too badly damaged then there shouldnt be too many problems, but check to see what was repaired and what was replaced, the mis-aligned gaps could be something not adjusted properly or its still bent.
the instrument cluster isnt completly sealed so the bug could have got in there any time.

most of the time people buy those cars and do cheap and quick repairs to make money..... safety wise.... i wouldn't buy it.

Not always. A fly got inside my instrument cluster this year which had to be extracted.

I wouldn't buy a car that has been smashed front and rear and had dodgy repairs done to it, especially for $6000. Why not go to an auction like pickles or aberdeen auto auctions on newcastle street. I think they are on every wednesday night.

Thanks for your responses guys. I was totally clueless. I really thought dash clusters would be sealed. Anyway I guess I will continue to look and yes you are all right $6k is alot of money. Just got excited at a cheap low k newish corolla.
David G, are those auctions for repossed cars or just damaged cars? Thanks again

i wouldnt worry about the k's .... hell there is guys on here who think there soarers have genuine k's.

and if you buy from damaged cars from Auctions just remember when you go trying to sell it and the buyer does a revs check on it they will tell them it has been in an accident and been repaired .............not that it matters if it has been repaired just as long as it has been done right.........something to think about.

when you hear something has been repaired you tend to think about it more .
