Hey everyone,
Well I've officially finished high school, and now I have to figure out what I want to do! Still a little lost, but I'm interested in painting cars, I'm thinking of going to TAFE to do a car painting course and then an apprenticeship, maybe start up a mobile painting business in the distant future, just fixing up any little scratches and dings in peoples cars.
Any car painters around here, got any advice? Or anybody who knows a car painter? Whats the work like and is it decent money? And when I say decent, I'm not really too fussed, just enough to live comfortably

My only advice? do it. I wish i had when i got outta school. I think the money's pretty good and better still you can paint your own/friends cars gotta love that.

mate wouldnt know crap about it, except that a friend of someone i know paints cars and has heaps of trouble with constant skin conditions from the paint. He also reckons that wearing all the protective gear isnt practical. I would know if this is true or not, but if its a career path you should look into any long term negative effects. How bout straight up mechanic? might be less repetitive over the long term.

haha fair enough. I agree on your point about trades, I'm not into the whole idea of uni...I was thinking of doing business at Curtin or something at one stage, but personally I think a desk job would bore me.
But like I said, I'm just gunna get a full-time job next year until I really know what I want to do.

i know a few people who were spray painters. they all say it depends on how much you like it and how good you are as to whether its a good job. like all jobs the money you make comes down to how good you are at it and how much you do. if you run the business or work for someone else. also if you do it as a job chances are you might become tired of it and wont want to do your own(should never take your take home with you) and if you're going to be looking at a fulltime job next year it might pay to convince a spray painter to give you a week or so work exp so you have more of an idea of what it's all about. i'm sure you'll have a spare week while looking for work. just my 2c, and enough of Dr Phil. ooooh and trades are great to have. especially one that can branch into other areas. you can always go to uni later on in life.

I reckon go the Trade...
I work in construction which I enjoy, but often wish I had a trade to fall back on......once you got it, its always there. And it doesn't mean you have to do it for the rest of your life but you have the skill......
