After following the coverage of the Australian fires over the last couple of days, I was informed through my school that one of our key teachers evolved with operating the computer systems... was recently faced with the news that 5 of his Australian relations had fallen as victims to these tragic, wasteful and shockingly deliberate fires at their home. In spite of that news, I genuinely hope no members here on Soarer Central or their family/friends have been effected in any shape or form through the path of the fires. If you have any thoughts on this event please feel free to comment.

Altho my family is from Victoria, none of our relatives live over their so I cant say I know anyone whos been affected by this tragedy. A lady from work has her whole family in Vic and they have lost everything. Its sad really I have donated some money.. it wasn't much but yeah, better than just sitting here thinking about it I guess. It definitely makes Ash Wednesday look like a bonfire

Thanks for your thoughts guys. I live about 5km's from where the fires are and know a lot of people that have lost their homes and their families. Some of the personal stories of the ones that survived are horrific. There is a lot of support coming from everywhere, but there are so many people left with absolutely nothing. I have a very close family friend from kinglake that survived but is living in the community centre with 300 odd people and the salvation army and red cross just can't cope with the demand for food, clothing, basically anything and everything that is needed to get through another day. If any one wants to donate anything these people will greatly appreciate it. Just keep everyone in your prayers and thoughts.

Did any Soarers get lost in the blaze??? are you kidding me adam MANY people have lost their lives, loved ones and homes and "THE MOST IMPORTANT QUESTION IS" did a soarer get burnt. you insensitive person. how would you feel if you lost your WHOLE family and home. then some IDIOT asked you "is your car ok". you should think about what you write. and if someone lost their soarer i'm damn sure they would not be worrying about it while the fires are STILL burning and killing friends and neighbours. i feel sorry for if your car is the most important thing in your life maybe one day you might reconsider this. |

Humour may be ill-timed but it is as good a response as any to disaster and despair. If you have made a contribution and don't live in the area, what are you supposed to do? Cover yourself in sackcloth and self-flagellate? I appreciate your sentiments Carlo, but if you think Adam was serious and should be punished for it, get a life yourself.

I thought about it, I found it funny, so I posted it. Sorry if your sense of humour is so un-Australian that you can't appreciate a joke about some unfortunate events. |

I see nothing wrong with Adam's post. However I do think Carlo's posting of a red smiley with flames going up its face is particularly insensitive and he should be banned immediately. How dare you make fun of people whose heads are on fire.

At my work area there are a dozen or so TV screens, the largest one is right in in front of me. The various news channels as you can imagine are covering these terrible bushfires constantly. I am fighting back the tears for a lot of my shift as I am just overwhelmed by the sadness of what everyone is going through. I am so drained by the end of my shift from listening to the tragic interviews with people who have lost friends and relatives, particularly the kids. Like every other Aussie, I can't comprehend it. In addition to everything else, what got to me last night was the white pony that had been burnt on his mane and muzzle. I had to do a lot of blinking to stop from crying. My thoughts and prayers go to everyone, including the firies, police, support staff and the ADF, who has the horrific task of looking for bodies. I was going to buy some clothes this week, now I am going to put that money towards a donation because a lot more people need clothing than I do.

My thoughts go out to those that have fallen and to those that have lost..... When the government hands out $950 to everyone I will be donating the full amount to this cause... I don't need this money and to give to someone in need is more important! I am proud to be australian and I'm going to do my bit... I would like to think that other member's of our club do the same.... Yeah! Right now I have big bills to pay(like most) but I have a house/car and my family... $950 wont change my life but those in this tragedy it will... Please all at least donate something out of that handout that the government shouldn't give to us...

I don't know who the donation should go to or what the point is. Most of the bloody charity organisations only end up getting a quarter of the money to the people, and not right now when it's needed. As far as I can see, insurance and Centrelink are writing cheques pretty quickly and Rudd has promised to rebuild everything no matter the cost. I gave some cash to a mate who knows people whose place burned down. He is going to go shopping with them and buy their kids some school clothes. That's fine - 100% of the money gets there right now. Beyond that I worry that some asshole is getting rich off these donations. I think they are pretty well taken care of for money now, it's help other than money that they probably need and probably won't get I also am sad that the week before, I think it was 70 people died from the heat and the power going out. Noone is crying for them. It made one headline and noone gave a crap. A ferry tipped over and 300 something people drowned. Barely made about the tenth page of the paper. No appeal for them With all the money the government is handing out and people are giving, I would hate to see the survivors feeling guilty that all of their towns are rebuilt better than before, at the cost of their mates.

How about we put our money and effort towards making sure this doesn't happen again? Lobby the government to make people build fire cellars and get the authorities doing seasonal back burning again. A while back Brumby wrote a letter to Rudd asking for a bushfire warning system. Rudd ignored it and Brumby didn't follow it up. We built a tsunami warning system though. Once again the government has failed our people. People in the bush weren't warned properly.

I agree Jeff, whilst I made commentary on it, I personally couldnt care less about the comment. I sometimes get the impression there are people on this forum who just arent happy unless they are whinging or bitching about something. Hell, I tried to change the mood of the thread a little and not even a bite... its as if some of these people are interested in focusing on negatives rather than positives

I do not wish to appear lemming-like in opposing Ben's view, but I wonder if Ben realises that other people might indeed realise the severity of the situation and how this might be affecting the people involved? I can not speak for Ben's personal situation or how his friends or relatives may have been affected but neither has he, and nor do I think he should. I can imagine someone writing in 1940, "There's a war on. People are dying pointlessly. No jokes until 1945 please."

Well said Mr.Vaughan. I work for Olex cables (NZ), which is a division of Olex Australia. 3 of the employees of Olex Australia have lost their homes as a result of the fires, to date no employees of Olex Australia have lost their lives, A LOT of Olex AU's employees are members of the Fire Brigade on a voluntary basis, and have been ACTIVELY involved since the onset. WE employees in NZ have taken up a collection to aid Olex AU employees affected by the flagration, and had NO hesitation in doing so. If Adam wants to add a little humor in to the situation, so be it. It is all too common these days to be a triffle "Precious" about what should, and should not be said.................FFS!, lighten up!. YES, the fires are still burning, YES the TRUE death toll will not be known for some time.............BUT, lighten up!.......for Christs sake! Whether you like it OR NOT!.............People CAN flee if they are given sufficient warning.............the animals can not!. I have been reduced to tears by pictures of the Australian wildlife crawling on burnt and blistered limbs, trying to escape a situation that they do not understand!. YES, we've all seen pics of "Sam" the rescued Koala, and may she have a speedy recovery, along with all the other wild life that doesn't make it in the NEWS, but can we for once STOP taking "Pot shots" at other members for their sense of humor (or lack there of!) in the current circumstances. I support TOTALLY what David Vaughan says (above).....If half of you clowns had a remote understanding of War and sacrifice, you would be a LOT more circumspect with what you write. If you disagree............TOUGH

I understand the severity of it all. My parents were both born in that area, I have lots of family scattered throughout that area, some who have lost everything and some who lost nothing. My old man was a Bushy for 32years and started out in Bendigo doing it. i'm very grateful for all of the thought people have given, and at the same time I'm grateful for the attempts at lightening the mood. Everyone is going to react differently but i believe that most people who are caught up in this mess would welcome the light hearted humour opposed to the constant "Our thoughts are with you". They don't need a constant 24hr reminder, they have that there right in front of them. As it is I'm still waiting to find out if my family are in the "unidentifiable" if you want to make a joke and get my mind off it for a while, then thanks. If you don't want to make a joke then don't. It's quite a simple decision really.

I agree with Mr.Vaughan, if he had said something like 'the roof the roof the roof is on fire, we dont need no water let the mother burn' then I could understand that as harsh and without thought but it was a light hearted joke about soarers...on a SOARER website. Lets face the facts....this is regional victoria, bush country...you cant drive a soarer properly in the bush so there probably isn't any maybe if you attached a bullbar, big mud flaps, truck stacks, spotlights and 4WD. Come on guys keep your hateful/vengeful comments to yourself instead of flaming the board up and turning people off posting.
