One of the reasons I asked this question was because of an experience of mine. A couple of years ago when I was running a support group, one of the members said "well, as you are the alpha male....".
Up until this point I hadn't thought about it, but it made me realise that I can be something to someone and not be aware of it.
As to how to attain the status, I feel there are many ways to do so. There would be by intimidation, by putting another down so as to elevate self, there would be ingratiation and also by simply appealing to someone's sensibilities. Obviously, you would be aware if you used any of the former, but perhaps not so much so with the latter. |

Hmmm interesting thread.
I reckon the alpha male is the one of the group who organises things. Others in the group may think they are getting it easy by having this "guy" who organises everything (parties, meet ups etc) but in reality it is the ALPHA male who is getting it easy as HE gets to choose where and when to meet that suits HIS schedule and the others simply fit in if they can.
Mind you - its not always the loud, funny, big, best looking in the group who is the alpha male. If you watch a group of lads at the pub for example (not obviously so you dont get labelled something your not and get hate-crimed on) you can observe who REALLY runs the show by how the others act.
I reckon most guys are more than happy to go along with the flow and probably wouldnt consider themselves alpha males.

I find that most people want to be lead, even those who make a big song and dance about hating authority. (In fact especially this type as they use the authority to define themselves and excuse their behaviour). By accepting someone elses lead people can tranfser their fears and responsiblilties across to that person. The alpha male is, more often than not, that person. Some live it up. Some exploit it, and many don't realise they are it until a situation arises and they find themselves in charge and don't remember how they got to be in charge.
I'm an alpha male. I'd love to stay and chat, but I had better have the kids in bed or the missus'll be p!ssed when she gets home from the pub. |
