He sanded the paint off and proceeded to repaint using a spray can!!

I'm guilty of a similar thing many years ago.
I had a HQ ute that looked a bit average so I resprayed it with white house full gloss paint using an electric ack ack spray gun. When it was finished (with heaps of runs) I took the newspaper off the windscreen that I had used to mask it with, and a gust of wind blew it back onto the roof. I got the paper off, but the newsprint stayed in the paint. Lovely feature
