| ...probably just as bad for a wound up Porsche turbo as for a 6 litre V8? And really who cares anyway? The point was just that the gas guzzler myth on the V8 sports car is just that. ALL sports cars are guzzlers. There are some shocking SUVs made. The Tahoe is just a waste of metal. |

It will own a fair chunk of USA based enterprise soon. The TL;DR version .. 'America' is becoming more and more afraid of a military dispute with China and so is encouraging Chinese investors to buy in to American companies. The theory goes that if Chinese private and government enterprise has an interest in America they would not want to be involved in a conflict against the country which may hurt their investment. A smart short term solution to their ignorance and fear. |

| Not, quite. My point was that, there being no substitute for cubic inches, large or blown engines tend to get around tracks faster than smaller ones. By my criteria, cars do not need huge engines to go quickly on the road and just one of the benefits is lower fuel consumption, others typically including more nimble handling and easier parking in the city. |

| Pfffffff Callum. People like to think that kinda stuff. What a load of garbage. In reality the Chinese economy is barely 1/3 the size of the US economy or less. Their military is about useless, always has been. There are lots of "theories" about China circulating in Australia. Like the one that was going around 3 months ago that Australia would not go into recession because China's resource demand would not change and would see us through. Yeah that one didn't last long and now we are going into the worst debt hole we've ever seen. China has a huge impending cultural revolution on its hands, and has openly stated it needs to sustain 8% growth annually to be able to keep its people in check. The "yellow peril" is just as big a load of crap now as it was with Japan in the 60s. Once their workforce stops wanting to work for 2c an hour like happened in Japan, China is in for some interesting times. David, my point is that these days to produce 600hp, the big and the small engines doing it are using about the same amount of fuel. |

Damn smart! My respect for American politicians intellect just went up a notch, even as my respect for their faith in humanity slipped away to nothing... |

| Was just doing some reading on the newer Ford V8s (as I'm not really up on them but am looking at a new motor for my Hilux). The "modular" V8 was introduced in '91 as a 2 valve SOHC 4.6L. After that came a 3 valve SOHC with variable timing. This motor has been in the Ward's 10 best engines for a few years. Then there's the 4 valve DOHC. That came out in '93. Alloy block with 6 bolt mains. The 5.4 came out in '97 in the same sorts of configurations. There are all sorts of power levels available and supercharging is done on both displacements. The performance notables for the 4.6: 2000-2008 Panoz Esperante 420hp 2003-2004 SVT Cobra Supercharged 390hp The performance notables for the 5.4: 2007-2009 Ford Shelby GT500 Supercharged 500hp 2010 Ford Shelby GT500 Supercharged 540hp 2008 Ford Falcon FPV GT 422hp And for the 5.0 Cammer crate motor: T50 Street motor 415hp And..... the Koenigsegg CCR held the title as the fastest production car for a while with a modified 4.7 litre supercharged at 806hp. Not bad for guys who work with "throw back tech"? Seems a lot like what Toyota could have done with the UZ motors if they'd bothered?? |

| Interestingly the GTR weighs a good 200kg more than the ZR1. The GTR doesn't even have satnav or parking sensors?? |

Imagine where the country would be if we didnt have the massive resource sector to fall back on. I can guarantee the Govt wouldn't have been so willing to give everyone $900 to inject back in to the economy. Australia is doing remarkably well when you compare to other countries, especially USA. I certainly know which country i would rather be in right now. |

| Public debt as a proportion of GDP is around 40% in the USA whereas it is expected to peak at 14% in Australia. The worst debt hole we have ever seen could be worse. We could be in the the land of free enterprise. P.S. I favour free enterprise |

| Check out Australia's private sector debt though. Last I saw it was up over 1.5 trillion. The US, with 15 times the population, has only 3-4 times the level of private debt. We have borrowed out the arse to buy McMansions and plasma TVs, and we don't export much. Ah the Australian GTR appears to not have GPS. Rest do. |

| I agree completely about private debt, Miles. I did not mention it because people love to focus exclusively on public debt. Now we have some perspective, both on the relevance of public debt and on whether Australia truly is "well positioned". |
