I vaguely recall about twenty or so years ago some American consulting group studied Australia and reported on productivity, amongst other things. The problem he said, was the slack attitude of Australians. This, he added, was epitomised by what he saw on a car in Sydney, a bumper sticker which read, "I'd rather be sailing."

Rewind 40-50 years, write "Japan" rather than "China", then think about the next 40-50 years.
I seem to recall that Britain was once the most advanced country in the world industrially, then 40-50 years after Britain's peak it was America. That was well over 100 years ago. I can go way further back to the point where Europe was copying China and Arabia, or beyond that if you feel like it.
It helps to watch the longer term before forming opinions about "races" or "progress". History happens. |
