Having not had to make this decision I am asking others how far would they go in the following scenario.
You have a pet you love dearly, and you have taken it to the vet to be told if it is to survive you have to spend a large sum of money. Alternatively, your pet can be euthanased for just $50.00.
I realise this decision could be based on many factors, but I'm interested to hear what you might do.
I know my younger pet (aged 3 years) would be well worth spending a considerable sum on, but the older (aged 20) I feel I would take the easy option.

How does the pet feel? Is it in pain?

keep the pet.
I did and it cost me close to $3000.
I still have the little critter sitting next to me.

I miss my cat, but cancer and arthritis were taking it's toll on the poor guy, so we put him down. He was pretty old I must say.

Age of the pet and other general health issues would probably factor into the equation for me.

We spent $2000 on my dog to have a growth removed from behind her eye.

I would do it again as well.

However a few months later a horse trod on her and broke her back.
There was a choice to have surgery to fix her up so that she can still live (albeit immobile) which we decided against. Not because of the cost but her quality of living just wouldn't suit the character of dog she was (running around chasing things, digging holes etc all the time).

It is a very hard decision to put a pet down.
I have had to do it 3 times, and possibly another coming up(dog is 14)
If the pet is young, and can have an extended life with an opp, I would do it.
It all depends on the problem really, and the owners feelings for the pet.
