I am beginning to get a bit interested in getting involved in motor sport. I would like to compete in sprints, hillclimbs, track days and am looking into a number of different cars to figure out the most suitable. But I have no idea about what i need to do to get involved and be allowed to race. I want to know what sort of CAMS license i need, how to get one, and what the regulations are for different categories of cars, and things like what modifications are allowed. In another thread i am discussing suitable cars, but does anyone know or know where i can find the answers to my questions?

The first thing you need to do is join a car club. A real one, not just a car forum like this one. I joined the local MG car club in newcastle because they have a hillclimb track and are pretty active. You need to be a member of a CAMS affiliated car club to get a CAMS licence. There is a list of suitable clubs on the CAMS website.
From there have a look at what is on in you club, or the local area. Most clubs invite other clubs to their events.
I have a L2S (level 2 speed) licence which allows you to do pretty much all you want. You just cant race 'door to door' with other cars.
Alternatively you can only go to AASA events such as Wakefield park. You don't need a CAMS licence, but an AASA one which is only about $50 a year.

Also, have a look at the 'track car' threads. There is plenty of information there about going to track days. Pen also has a thread in the information area about prepping your road car for the track.
You don't need anything special. Plenty of guys just take their streeter with fresh brake pads and have a blast. You don't need to be the fastest to enjoy it. Actually a smart guy told me once: the faster your car can go through corners, the worse the accident will be when you find the limit...
I have a stripped out Soarer and it is plenty of fun. Cost $4000 to buy, and less than another $5000 to get to where it is now.
