Hey All,
I wrote off my Celsior on Saturday (see celsior chat) So in need of a new car. I have about 25K to spend and I'm leaning towards a 2006 Subaru liberty Manual V6. What do you think? I want something practical that is capable of towing long distances.

any suggestions greatly appreciated!

thanks guys... I looked at a stormy blue bilstein special edition today... Black leather, mcintosh stereo, 5 star NCAP 6 air bags, 6 speed manual, sun roof etc. Has some serious grunt too :-)

Any other opinions

One of my employees has a 2004 outback, which is pretty similar I guess - his is only the 2.5 litre boxer, no the '6, which I do think is a much better engine, though my engine reconditioning mate recons otherwise, and he'd know more about it than me. It is the manual.

Anyway, my workmates Outback, its He has spent endless amounts of money fixing the transfer system when it started to whine, the headgaskets when they (both) blew, the clutch when the master cylinder AND flex plate failed, and generally keeping it serviced with Subaru who seem to charge an arm and a leg every time they go near it with some filters and fluids. He's looking forward to offing it and getting something more reliable, but since he uses his bike most of the time now, he can't justify getting rid of it after spending all that cash fixing it. He's the second owner and the car has been serviced religously by Subaru dealerships by both himself and the previous owner.

Anyhow its just one car, and you can't judge a whole company on one car I guess. It's put me off though.

I dont care what ya buy, as long as ya post up one of them pics of you when you buy it aye .... :-)

Seriously though, i asked my mate who is a Suby mechanic . He is not a fan of them . Reckons the 6 spends alot of time in the workshops compared to the 4 banger . Oh and its a Flat 6 and a Flat 4 . Subaru dont make V style engines dude.

Thanks James.... not Bad.

I'm leaning towards this one:

its
http://www.carsales.com.au/all-cars/private/details.aspx?R=7095090

Its an '05 3.0L straight (thanks Dan), 5 speed auto, B spec which means upgraded suspension by bilstein, 18" bilstein wheels, Mcintosh 13 speaker stereo, Factory fitted GPS, Leather, sun roof.

Its pretty nice and was mid $50,000 new but pretty pricey to. I'll see what I can negotiate....

Not an A4 or 3 series because of the towing requirement. A4's are nice cars yes but they aren't capable of towing a go kart trailer

Yeah I thought about a legnum but I've heard bad reports on reliability and parts are dear as with any import - You can get some excellent parts factory fitted to the liberty from STI which is another attraction to it

m-eh.. expensive parts ... whatever. Its just like when i bought my 1st import (skyline) everyone warned me bout "expensive import parts"... its a bit of a crock in my opinion, there are plenty of decent jap part importers now. Sure you may not be able to waltz on down to a wreckers and check over a whole pile of Legnums or whatever but there ARE parts avail.

Anyways - ive always loved the B4s but i dont know if i would pay that much for a car in general.

So I bought the liberty to replace the poor celsior It is a nice car but you can tell the build quality is nothing on lexus :-( the paint is so thin and the sun rood rattles. This probably isn't helped by the bilstein suspension which provides a fairly "firm" ride. The seats are also a bit to narrow for my shoulders(I'm 6'1")

But by George it goes quickly! with the all wheel drive 3.0 straight 6 5 speed auto in sports shift WOW~! with the stiff suspension i likes corners too very very quick around them

Anyway its sad when you are forced to move on from something you love but I'm sure I'll get used to the liberty and learn to love it like the celsior. Once I've got some mods on it I'll post some pics for yas

Why didnt you just get another Celsior ??? LOL .

Or a nice Lexus GS300 ? They are really nice and would probably go as fast as if not faster than the Suby but with that Lexus build quality :-)

Yeah I dunno the celsior was my baby and I guess it just couldn't be replaced and I would always feel disappointed. At least the Suby is newer and much safer + its better on fuel and has cheaper parts that hopefully won't break so I guess I'm happy

The 6-cylinder Subaru is a flat six. I've not heard anything bad about them, but unless it has a higher tow rating than the 2.5 (or 2.5 turbo) you're better off with the 4-cyl. In any case, I didn't think the 3.0 (later models are a 3.6l I believe)was ever available in manual. Subarus are unbreakable (other than a few niggles like leaky seal at the front of engine- an easy fix) I had a 2WD '93 model which last I heard had 320,000 km up without any engine work (although the auto box was on the way out and the cam seal had been done many times). Subarus are not renowned for good fuel economy and I'd imagine the six would be worse than the 4-cyl. Parts aren't exactly cheap, either, although it's possible to buy non-genuine at better prices. They are certainly a "characterful" car, the flat-four engine beat is music, if you like that sort of thing.

Interiors tend to be a tad stodgy for my taste (and I detest dark interiors at the best of times) and at least, back in the early 90s, the plastic was hard and brittle- my lower dash was always having bits and chips dropping off. The all wheel drive is an advantage if you don't mind paying the fuel economy payoff, especially for towing.
