Personally i dont agree with charging people extra money based on their body weight or implementing a system which adversely affects larger people.

However i will not defend the huge costs you get pegged for excess luggage.

It would be interesting to know the effectiveness of a system where you get charged a flat fee of say $20 for up to 5kg over, $50 for up to 10kg over and exponentially increasing costs above that.

That way you keep the sods who are only a few kg over because of extra crap they bought on their holiday happy but dont allow people to get in to a habbit of bringing incredibly heavy bags.

That all said and done, 20kg is a LOT of crap to be taking on flights. Remember you can wash clothes abroad.

If you think smartly about how you travel as well you can avoid weight problems.
As a seasoned traveller i have learnt to pack throw-away clothes such as older socks and underwear, t-shirts etc.
Get a couple of uses out of them on a trip then leave them in the bin when they get smelly. It may cost you up to $50 in clothes but they were old anyway. Plus it gives you room to fill with crap that has been bought abroad.

Callum it's not about keeping people happy who just bought a few t shirts. It's not about being polite to people because it's rude to tell them they're fat. 1 extra kg costs X extra $. You fly, you pay. Not hard to understand when you're sending a package in the cargo hold.

So how would you pre-sell tickets, eg online? Rely on people to be honest about their weight?
Or charge them extra at check in time for the weight correction factor if required?

Swipe your ticket and stand on the scales as you go through boarding. If you lied, get out.

I don't see why it's so rude for weight to be a factor. I know people running a charter company with a few light aircraft - they require every passenger's weight to be able to safely load the aircraft. They have scales at their check-in desk, and you have to be weighed. I don't see the problem.

And for online bookings, just get everyone to enter their weight to calculate their fare, and as Miles said, confirm it at boarding. Allow a leeway of maybe 5kg either way, otherwise, pay extra or don't fly. Quite simple.

Perhaps it would be a good incentive for people to watch their weight a bit more if they're going to travel. Might help improve our country's image overseas, if the fatties stay home.

i dont think it would cost less if you didnt have obese people on board. say you have 500 people onboard. 250 are overweight by 10kg. now on the return flight they have all lost 10kg. total weight loss of 2500. divide that by 500 and you get 5kg more luggage allowance..which would be you are still flying the same weight, using the same amount of fuel...costing the airline the same..

What kind of logic is that?

How about the 250 people aren't fat, and everyone gets their normal luggage allowance. That's 2.5 tonnes less lard that the plane has to carry. That means ticket prices can come down.

Now as it happens I am 6'5 and 98kg (10% body fat) so I would be paying more than average. I have no problem with that.

Hmmmm, this is why i pay all my suppliers by credit card. I even make sure i get seated first, so I can watch all you pathetic economy class faggots get railroaded into some tiny little seat next to godzilla. I mean, I aint no business class passenger, just when I pay my accounts, i have so many points I often sell em for cash to inlaws.

I especially like how they address me as "Mr Mead" and address the E class poofs as "this isle, to your left"

Then theres the never ending top ups of free chivas, or glenfiddich. And they NEVER question your limits :-). The food is better, the seats ooh so comfy, provided you dont cop some 1970's 737 POS. I always check the onboard layout before booking.

Then theres the fact your baggage comes out of the turnstile before everyone elses, complete with bright pink tag, so the private hire drivers know who to look for.

And then, if your that type of client, theres the gloating as you waltz past everyone still waiting for some kind of service.

I aslo reccommend joining quantas club if ly at least 6 times a year, so worth it.

but for the sake of the topic, how can you charge someone less for being a pathetic 5'3" and charge someone more, like me, for being 6'5"???

there is NO WAY TO CONTROL HOW BIG I AM

Plus, is it my fault I have a pacific islander build? I mean you skinny little redneck faggots might think you are normal, but you aren't, you are examples of unfortunate genetics. Weak and unable to defend yourselves against superior genes.

You can divulge the genetics part im playing at here, right? Or is that too far out of your mental reach :-(

Easily handled, Tim. To discourage anorexia as much as obesity, calculate the z score deviation from the population BMI mean, square it (thus correcting the sign and weighting it appropriately in one step) and multiply it by the base ticket price. Therefore, some people will travel for free and cloning will take a great leap forward.

It's not a lifestyle tax. We're not trying to punish the chubby. We're charging on absolute weight to recoup airline costs. I'm fit but large, I'd pay more. Because it costs more to fly me.

BMI was not designed to measure health of athletes, Daniel. It was designed to indicate health risk areas within a normal population, most of whom are not athletes, even to the extent they imagine it. However, BMI is a sort of crock anyway in that waist-to-hip ratio, WHR, appears to be a far better indicator of health risk (Type II diabetes, heart problems). WHR is even applicable to athletes, although it is still not much use for billing passengers.

The BMI was made up in the black and white horse and cart 1970's. Has ZERO relevance to health.

A bodyfat ratio is a better indicator to punish the chubby maccas rapists.

K, theres just one more really important factor here, and no one has mentioned yet so:

Those f*cking asians man.

I mean seriously, they weigh about what? 28kg soaking wet holding a sack of rice.

But then they have like four trolleys with 10 polystyrene cartons, chock full of either sea cucumber, paw paw flower, chorizo sausages in cans, dried squid or some other that smells so bad they have use 8 rolls of packing tape just to seal them up.

Then they get to the counter, and act all surprised and when they are told they have to pay extra for the 142kgs of freight, and then comes the god damn "No speaka da engrish" act, and after hassling and haggling, and f*cking making 20 people miss their flights, the little homo behind the counter lets em through, "oh thath okay thith time, juth make thure you dont have too much nexth time, okaaaaaay??? Thaaaaankyou", then proceeds to check in their, err, foreign aid sized container lood of foodstuffs and doesnt charge em for it. Thats why the fuel/profit ratios aint adding up when the pilot come home.

THATS why there is a fluckyouasian of airfares these days.

hahahah... oh you ARE a clever kitten aren't you Aaron.

This really is interesting to hear what people think.

Oh and i dont reckon the fare should be ONLY charged on weight. In my post before i suggested a FLIGHT CHARGE straight up and then when you check in its THEN you get weighed up with all your kit and find out what else you have to pay.

I think this is a fair fare And yes being a tall guy i would be happy to pay extra for my weight that comes with my height.

Sure if you are tiny asian then RUCKY YOU ! you get to spend more at the casino... but if you are a sollie like Aaron, bad luck buddy cos pounds cost dollars haha
