is200, is300 aka Altezza with 2.0 or 3.0 NA il6, also available as a 4-cyl 2.0L turbo in Japan and in the hands of Neil Bates in the Targa Tasmania. Small 4-door sedan (wheelbase slightly longer than a Supra but shorter over all) targetted against BMW 3-series and Merc C class. Out-handles both, easily. I have an is300 and love it as much as the Soarer.

Neal Bates, Simon. Do not know the model number. He has one, which he occasionally runs around Tasmania at Targa time. When I was talking to him about suspension upgrades to the is300 he made it clear enough that a 4-cyl turbocharged Altezza was as powerful as the is300 and quite a bit lighter, hence faster. We went for a run in it (no, alas, Neal was very sedate) but it banged and clattered owing to a lack of rubber in the shock towers. Anyway, I bought (imported) the Eibach springs and Koni shocks as a result and Neal's shop fitted them for me; rather like a refined version of the Altezza we drove.

David From memory, Neil built a custom hybrid IS200/300 with a turbo'd powerplant implanted which he campaigned.. kind of like the hybrid current shape Corolla with the ST205 Celica 3SGTE and 4WD drivetrain they've campaigned in the ARC for the last few years as a TTR prototype.
Different versions of the Altezza available in Japan:-
RS200 (codename SXE-10) This is a purely domestic model. If you find one outside Japan, for which there are many, then it has been parallel-imported. It went into production in 1998. It runs a 3S-GE 1998cc inline-4 DOHC 16v engine with Dual VVT-i. Peak power is 210hp @ 7600 rpm for the 6-spd manual and 200hp @ 7000 rpm for the 5-spd e-shift. The manual will do 60 in 7.2 seconds (8.0 seconds for the auto).
There are some one-off JDM niche models of this car, such as the 280T, which bumps horsepower to 280hp using a turbocharger. Tuners like Toms and HKS also sell their modified versions of this car in Japan.
AS200 (codename GXE-10) This is available in Japan as is or as a Lexus IS200 overseas. It runs a 1G-FE 1998cc inline-6 DOHC 24v engine with VVT-i. Peak power is around the 155hp mark (slightly different hp figures quoted in different countries) @ 6200 rpm. The 6-spd manual will do 60 in 9.5 seconds (the 4-spd non-e-shift auto is 10.2 seconds). This is car is also available as the 'Gita' or 'Lexus Sportcross', which is the wagon model, and carries the codename GXE-10(W).
AS300 (codename JCE-10) This is available in Japan as is or as a Lexus IS300 overseas. As we all know, it runs a 2JZ-GE 2997cc inline-6 DOHC 24v engine with VVT-i. Peak power is around the 215hp mark (depending on country) @ 5800 rpm. Available as a 5-spd e-shift only, except in America where a 5-spd manual is also available. Also available as the 'Gita' or 'Sportcross' carrying the codemane JCE-10(W).

Interesting, My understanding is the car he had was the niche 280T version of the RS200 rather than a revamped car but I did not set out to clarify that at the time. If you are curious (and I am a bit) then I can dash out and ask him the right answer.
