David, I don't think you'll have any trouble getting a taxi from there at any hour of the night. Be prepared for a substantial cost though as it's quite a way from the city.

Cabra ain't that bad mate, Especially if you are asian and you at least look like you are from there. Its a straight walk from the station to the restaurant and it's well lit. You should be alright getting the train back and it would save you about $60 or so.

Hey Mike and Lam, is this from experience? $60 cab?
Once upon a time I lived in Bonnyrigg Heights. Id have no dramas walking around Cabramatta alone but I will be traveling with my gf. She is terrified of these places.
I do not want to save a few dollars and sacrifice safety.

David, I'm sure you've grown large enough to scare attackers away! Jokes aside... no amount of weight training will help you in a confrontation, unless of course you know stuff like systema, silat etc

Cabrammata to town would be $75+ nowadays ! Taxis aint cheap, lol
Here Here
Cabs usually give you a ridiculous price now especially on a Saturday night and it's either pay or piss off. Wouldn't surprise me if they rip you for $100....

last time i was in sydney was at a concert and all the taxi's would lock their doors and ask everyone where they were going before they would let you in... after 4 hrs of this it gets really annoying even if you are the first to the cab by a long shot they only want the biggest fare. they are wankers by the end of the night i wanted to smash their doors in

I frequent Cabra quite a bit because my dad drags me to all of the vietnamese community gatherings that they have there and my GF and I usually end up stumbling out of the function center about 12 or 1 and walk to the station. Never had a problem.
As for the fair I was being kind. I reckon it would be more then that.

You don't really get hassled by the locals at Cabramatta, It's the bloody aussie white trash drugo's who go to Cabramatta to get their drugs that are the problem. They are on the look out for any way they can get money for their gear. They travel to and from Cabra by train. They used to have security at the station, Don't know about now. My mum was the only white aussie woman left in her street at Cabramatta before she died and the local asian people where really good to her. There used to be a bit of tension between the Serbs, Croats and asian gangs over drug turf but I think they sorted that out and have their own little areas now.

mate theres nothing specially wrong about cabra. its just got a lot of dealers etc. on the street. its not like its a no go zone. lets not marginalise those who live in less fortunate circumstance. my (aussie) family had its roots in cabra and they are proud of it to this day. Tough people they are. take a walk on the wild side.

We ended up catching the train from central. It took about an hour to cabramatta lol.
Man it was seedy (no offence)
We were walking on the foot path, infront of us was a lady with a pram. 20M up the road there was an asian man squatting on the foot path and did not budge for the lady or the pram. WTF? anyways.
Poor audrey was scared until we arrived at the restaurant. We saw quite a few druggos and over heard a deal going down. LOL.
We ended up staying at Capitol Square Hotel. As you may know, it was bloody hot in sydney. Our room had no aircon. It was pretty much blowing hot air around so we advised the staff and we were moved to another room.

I was not game enough to drive around the CBD and streets of SYD. Whole new ball game compared to southside Brisbane but very much like Northsiders of brissy haha.
PS. I didnt know taxi's could refuse service to anyone travelling a short distance. Whatever happened to the good ol days where they were happy to take anyone anywhere?

It's illegal to refuse a fare (or to refuse a guide dog) and taxi drivers can be reported. The only basis on which a driver can refuse a fare is if the rider is drunk (and therefore likely to spew in cabbie's nice clean taxi).
Cabbies are wont to lose their licence if they get too many reports of refused rides. I drove a cab for a week (which was long enough, thank you) and the only hassle I had was with a quad of huge Maoris who literally threw (insufficient) shrapnel at me for the fare and pissed off (and they we going TO the pub, not even pissed yet!). Mind you that was nearly 30 years ago, I wouldn't want to drive a taxi now, even if the cars are 10 times better.
As for Cabramatta, I grew up not far from there, and all I can say is, it's changed a lot (and I'm not referring to Asians, who were already there in large numbers when I lived at the edge of Fairfield (almost Canley Vale).

I don't know about that, I'm pretty sure the taxi driver I had last time I was in Northbridge purposefully drove to make me puke. He was cool though, told me it was better out then in.

It's up to the driver, Phil, but they are entitled to refuse a fare. Can you imagine how long it takes to clean a spewy car, and how subsequent passengers might feel about paying for a damp and/or smelly ride? You guy must have been a larrikin- don't try that trick in Sydney or Melbourne, where a large number of drivers are from a religion which disapproves of drinking.

Taxi drivers can refuse a fare under certain circumstances. Taken directly from the NSW Government Transport website:

Note that they can't knock back fares because they don't like people's destination (although if I were a cabby now there are some rough areas I wouldn't like to take passengers to). Cabbies seem to hate short fares like terminal to terminal at Mascot- but that's a short fare which makes good dough due flag fall and easy to pick up another fare.
