I suppose comfort is relative depending on what you are used to. I have had three people in my soarer for an 8 hour, 500km drive around the tararua ranges (hutt valley-waiarapa-paihiatua track-palmy-home via paekakariki hill rd), and no-one complained. and these weren't midgets either. that is when that pic of my car in the corners was taken.

the supra is a very versatile car, and it has a kind of everyday usability that hot hatches do not, and the price of that is a bigger, heavier car.

That has to be the stupidest thing I've heard today!

I'm sorry but you're not going to bring out your hot hatch only "on the weekend". Yes dear this 4cyl 7L/100km vehicle is here just for when i feel like going for long drives to the beach and back".

The hot hatch is designed around driving every day for short stints while having plenty of power for the few times you'd want to put your foot down! If you have the option of taking your 7L/100km car to the local shops to pick up a lot of shopping, or your 12L/100km supra which are you going to take? Well the supra has a boot. I guess. It's not very big. The hatch folds down its two rear seats to take 2-3x as much shopping as your supra could have is tiny and will fit into small parking spaces when the commodore is half into your park too and so every other car has left it. It's designed for weaving in traffic being a good half meter shorter than the supra with the response for moving into traffic speed being more than adequate for the job.

Actually I'll stop here, maybe this would be quicker if you tell me what you think hot hatches ARE good for? If not daily driving for a good balance of fuel economy, convenience for holding large amounts of things and a bit of punch for weaving through traffic and short trips to and from work that don't cramp your back in their often incredibly stiff chair+suspension combination?

pretty much what you just described, actually. short trips, with one or two people in them. I had a hatchback before I got my soarer, and it was okay for short trips, but I got cramped if I wore shoes with thick soles, because the seat was always as far back as it went. the back seat passengers were always cramped, you had trouble if you wanted to tow with it, it was loud, pulled to the left all the time, and had no mod cons.

that, to me, is not everyday drivability, that is a car that you take out in the weekends and thrash, then drive your comfortable, roomy cruiser everyday.

Not relative to every hatchback.

Not even remotely close to the typical hatch.

Soarers and supras both have pointless back seats not big enough for practical use unless the people are well below average height.

Sure a hatch doesn't have as much room as a family car but they make much more efficient use of space than most lux/sports coupes.

tell that to the average height kiwi bloke who spent 8 hours in mine. one of the people I have had in my back seat was well over 6 foot, and he was comfortable. I realise my car wasn't representative of the typical modern hatchback, but you can't have more room inside than the car physically takes up

Although the rear seats in the Soarer CAN be a bit hard to get into, once I'm in and belted I find it quite comfortable.

I'm only 5'10" (178cm) though.

The seats themselves I actually find really good...but I know for taller people, there'd not be enough leg room.

soarer has plenty of back seat room when the main occupant is 5 years old. good for two kids at least.

I use my rear seat all the time for the toddler seat. Fits in perfectly, bit of a pain to hook it up, and when our little fella couldn't get in and out by himself it was awkward, but now he can clamber in himself its no problem, all I have to do is reach over and clip the buckels up. He loves the Soarer.
