Hi Damian,
I have managed to do it with Windows Movie maker, but I am not happy with it. I had to download a PIP application (found a tutorial on youtube of all places) and then use it but you have no control over the size and transparency of the smaller picture. Getting the timing right is also a bit hit and miss.
What I really want to do is have the graphics superimposed on the video, not as a separate picture in picture. I have seen videos done with it, so it is possible.
I might try that virtual dub tomorrow and see how it goes.

Not sure mate, I haven't done it yet but being transparent could be good but I was planning to locate it in a dead zone of the picture, I have seen this done with the overlay over the dash in some video.

Looks great for a first effort Ben.
What resolution was the original footage recorded in?
Errm, dunno. I just use the little cannon powershot SD750 and a 4 gig card. Looking at the camera, it is set to 'standard' and the size is 640x480, 30fps. I just realised there is a 'sport' setting so I might try that next time.
I am still searching the net for something or someone to help me figure out what I am trying to do. Once I know how to do the 'transparent overlay' I'll be happy.
If there is nothing on TV tonight I might do up another one with a different camera angle (shows the gauges, and the rear view mirror). Due to my somewhat relaxed attitude on the day I didn't bother recording too much data, so I have to guess what lap was what when trying to marry up the lap timing to the video. I mean, I'll never drive Oran Park again, so why work too hard!

Thanks Jol. I might take you up on that one day. For the moment I am happy to keep hacking away as TV sucks in Summer.
I tried again with another program to get the PIP, this time you can set the size and location yourself. Still can't work out the transparent thing... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XOvt01Z1bWA
