Today we tried to get the sump plug off a VY commodore, but it wouldnt come off, just wondering it is a 19mm socket that meant to be used? Its on really tight.

if some idiot has gotten strong with it I have had to use a single hex socket and a breaker bar a few times at work.

And thats why you should always put a new washer on when you change your oil.

there are crush washer kits from supercheap/repco etc they're just on the racks with the bolts and things. they're assorted sizes, just pick out the right one and you'll be right. that way you don't have to do it up as tight and next time you don't have to put your back out undoing it

When things like that are really tight a socket isn't the best as the socket is liable to tilt over, slip off, damage your hands and round off the hex. A correct size ring spanner held on and a hammer strike on the other is preferable. If, when the plug is finally loosened, it still requires effort to fully remove then there's thread damage and a new one should be bought. The pan thread should be tapped out if the new plug doesn't go in easy. While you're down there check that the 'land' that the plug washer goes up against isn't damaged.

Or use a ring and open ended spanner, ring end on the plug, and hook another ring end over the open end to give more leverage. Works a treat in all sorts of tricky situations (exhaust nuts, stud removal etc)

Dave it's more prone to happening when using cheap sockets with bad tolerances, never had a problem with slipping off on good sockets so long as I'm careful. Giving the bolt a bit of shock helps also, I usually use the end of a extender bar and a hammer on to give the bolt a few hits and it's made it easier. I bet that plug will definitely need a good washer somebody must have tightened it to breaking point.

make sure you use a single hex socket and breaker bar to loosen, not tighten lol as gets better contact with head of plug and better chance of getting off without stripping. if its stripped you are better off to replace the plug and washer as will just be worse the more you do it. done hundreds of them in commodores (holden mechanic) ive only had two or three ive had to cold chisel to get loose. usually geta single hex socket and tap on with hammer and put pressure against it to give less chance of slipping and then undo it natasha.

My boyfriend and I have had a civic, an audi90 sport, a VR accliam, a toyota lexcen, a VY and my soarer and out of all of them I like the soarer the best, but our commodores are great fun too, at the moment we have a project car, the lexcen and It drives really nice. We got dicked for driving the car on a sunday to a mechanic with an unregistered permit, and had to pay $560. Apparently you cant drive them on weekends, and you cant have it on the naturestrip or any council property without a permit or it gets towed. I didnt even know. Anyways, commodores are really good, you can make them real fast and they look tough

I tend to flip flop between them as Dad owned both at one stage or another, but I think based on the current crop of Falcons and Commodores, I'd definitely pick a Ford. As a road car, the current Falcons are just a step above the current Commo's, right across the range. Of course ultimately I can always think of another car in the same price range I'd much rather have, so I very much doubt I'll ever own either.

VL Turbos are great, massivly over priced though, id love a walkenshore (dont know how to spell it), we havnt serviced the car yet, we are going to to it tomorrow? so hopefully it works out alright. We did try a cheap 19mm socket and it began to thread, so we used a good socket and it didnt slip off but still didnt work. Tomorrow were going to use a breaker bar. By any chance can you use a rattle gun or its there not enough room. You need good leverage, maybe something long to push on. I dont know, everyones ideas have been very helpful though, so thanks people
