MS is releasing IE9 Beta today. It has some very interesting features, some new to IE and others new to all other browsers. Have seen quite a few initial reviews that came across very positive about IE9. Can IE9 temp me to change my favourite browser, Google Chrome? Will it blow me away?? Let us see ...

Tab placement looks pretty poor. In comparison, Chrome wastes less space vertically AND has more room for tabs horizontally.

Still a huge step forward, considering the majority of Windows users still use IE.

I do think Chrome will always be ahead of the game in terms of rendering and javascript speeds.

I also found the same thing with the tabs. But this is only beta and I am pretty sure they will fix for the final build.

I started using chrome when it came out and I was totally blown away by the speed for rendering on the screen and also due to an optimized javascript engine. But IE9 (on paper atleast) is way faster than Chrome with rendering due to hardware acceleration and the javascript speed is comparable with Chrome. The following link has some tests at the bottom.

Two things I like to be in IE9 for the final release are an inbuilt spell cheker and an inbuilt quick translation tool for other language pages automatically, so that I browse some jap sites for parts :-)

Firefox has had that for as long as I've been using it...

I have a Macbook Pro with bootcamp. I never use OS-X any more because Windows 7 is just so much better. OS-X is feeling pretty old these days. Needs a major update.

Well, that just totally changes my opinion, I shall un-install it immediately for fear of becoming gay-ised by it.

No, honestly both OS-X and iOS are in need of major plastic surgery if they want to complete with the likes of Windows 7 and Android, both of which have it in spades in the eye candy and basic usability stakes. OS-X feels like it hasn't had a major visual update since 2002, and iOS still looks much the same as it did in 2007 with lots of tack on bits.

I'm sure Apple will get around to it soon - in the mean time they do seem to be somewhat coasting on their "cool" hardware design and marketing - that won't last forever though.

marketing

That bit alone sums up apple! Take "Face Time" for example, currently can only call other apple iPhone and iPod touch devices and only on wireless. It's being marketed heavily as an "Innovation" in the way we communicate. Now take my 7 year old Sony Ericsson sitting unused in my draw, it has front/rear cameras and is cable of voice/video chat via the mobile network to any voice/video capable mobile phone (excluding the iPhone). My 4 Year old Sony is the same (in the same draw), my current Samsung F480.

I'm hanging for my contract to expire so that I can go get me an Android based device. I doubt I could stand Steve Jobs telling me what I can and can't do with my device. Oh and don't bring that "Jail Break" crap up, only Apple could get away with marketing what essentially is a "rootkit" as something "cool".

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rootkit

Oh just back on topic... Microsoft have done too many shady things, too many annoying things and caused far to much frustration for me to get even vaguely excited about a technology that they thought would go nowhere until they decided it was going somewhere and used their monopoly to stifle innovation and hold back the internet for years.

I am getting rather annoyed with the amount of spam Apple broadcast. It seems they are trying to become world leaders in email "marketing".

Scratch that, it's just slower for some reason.. and doesn't have the status bar turned on by default to tell you stuff is loading.
