Its caused by the eye muscles having to work in ways they are not evolved to cope with & its a well documented consequence of watching 3D television and movies. There are plenty of technical articles around that explain why its bad for you - but like most things to do with the body, if you ease yourself into it and don't overdo it, your body will adjust over time - most experts do agree there could be long term consequences for overdoing it though (the eye muscle equivalent of RSI) As is always the case, some people cope/adjust better than others.

Got it. First disappointment, no fooking manual. There is an onscreen manual of sorts, but of course you can't be reading it while trying to do what it says. It's also really retarded like reading the Help on a motherboard BIOS from 15 years ago. It says the whatsit adjustment adjust the whatsit. No how, or why or explanation of any sort whatsoever. This truly is a huge disappointment that they either couldn't afford, or don't care enough about their clients to produce a manual. The menu's are also very un-intuitive. You have to pee around and go through many steps to do even the simplest of things. The button layout on the remote was done by a fashion designer on drugs, with 2 rings of buttons around the main button so it's too easy to hit the outer ring instead of the inner ring and Poof! just wasted all those steps getting to where you wanted to adjust something. After high quality CRT, the picture is well.. typical digital. Even when I backed the colours right off, bright reds still glow and fluoresc. It used to be you had controls described as "contrast" and "brightness" whish were fairly self explanatory and did what they said. One of the image controls is now called "picture". Hello!! It's a TV, we know it has a fooking picture! It appears that you can't really order the channels nicely. I wanted to simply have Button 1 = Ch 2, 2 = Ch7, 3 = Ch9 etc but Noooo you can't do that! You can delete channels, or move them to the button being used by another channel, but as eg no scanned channel uses Button 4, then you can't use it either. As you can see, as much as I knew that getting a new TV would be a downgrade to the old CRT for picture quality, I wasn't expecting the complete idiocy that is supposed to be modern design. Will I get used to it? I don't really have a choice, but I don't have to like it.

I stopped buying Sony after I discovered what the inside of my (non functioning, out of warranty) 2 year old mini system looked like (a bunch of flimsy plastic that snapped at the slightest provocation) - but their TV's still have a good reputation as far as I know? I bought Philips TV's for years, and my Philips LCD (now 5 years old) is great - but of course you can't get them any more - LG is the closest thing, and they aren't really tied to Philips any more anyway.

Sony use Samsung Panels , or Sharp in some of the HX series. and use their own elctronics. I'm looking at the 55" hx800 Peter , I thought it had the best picture in the store along with the HX series 40 and 46". I'm surprised about your findings, but interested to hear your thoughts. I'm waiting till the new years to see whats on offer, or maybe longer to see what happens with 3d There is about 15 movies in production for next year with 3d. Plasma Produces the best picture, There is no debate about this, it is the best technology for optimum picture qualty, but it has drawbacks , like the others do. LCD is lit by fluoro tubes, LED is LCD lit by LED's either back lit or side lit. side lit produces a thinner screen , backlit produces a better picture. LCD can't produce Black , becasue the FLouro tube is always on. LED's can blink on and off , which is what 200hz technology is based on. 200hz is just the screen refreshing a 1oo times a second ie 100hz, and the LED backlight is blicking in between to also "suedo refresh the image" ie. 200hz 600hz on a Plasma , is a just a way of saying that 24fps is the same as 100hz really. 24fps into 600hz = 25 , it's all about the math behind the processing. you can't refresh something 25.456 times or 103.54 times a sec , it can't be a fractional number , so the processors can handle the information. Samsung or Sony , Panasonic if your going plasma, or a S/h Pioneer.

After much frustration the picture quality is now much better. I had to change a fair bit including a default setting that makes the picture "warm" to kill the red flaring. There is still a lot I don't know what it does, or whether to mess with it, but over time I think it will be a great pic. I will keep hassling Sony for a manual - not sure what my chances are.

There are good deals out there now, whether it's cheaper at Christmas could depend on the exchange rate. Right now it's in our favour, it may not stay that way, and even so there is no guarantee that savings are being passed on. However I heard today that the same TV was $3.5 about six months ago, so $2.5k with $1k bonus pack looks good to me!

Be careful with that.. quite often they SAY they have made a loss, when in actual fact they just didn't make as much profit as was projected, and they CALL it a loss.. ie: we're going to make 100m this year.. oh noes, we only made 95m... so we made a loss of 5m .. |

The PS3 bonus pack arrived today. No forking manual with that either, or with the controller. Yet the 3D glasses came with a 42 paper page manual (many languages) and the little transmitter came with a 36 page manual - their original excuse for no manual with the TV was that they were helping the environment! Corporate hypocrisy. More bad news - the PS3 doesn't behave properly using an expensive 3D HDMI cable. I spoke to two (2) different Sony support people in Auckland to no avail, I was doing everything right but it wasn't working. I took the PS3 and HDMI cable back to the store, the hooked it up and it worked. Took it back home and it didn't work. Left it for a while then my son came around, switched it on and it worked - Yay! Then after a while it just stopped again. From further testing, it appears that the TV detects the HDMI input, but won't talk to it after the set has been on for a short while. So I guess I somehow have to pack the 46" TV and post it back to Sony so they can test it and puzzle over it for a few weeks? To say I am pissed with Sony is putting it mildly.

Hmm, this is all interesting stuff to know (for those of us who haven't bought a TV for a while and will probably be upgrading in the near future) so keep us posted! Expensive HDMI cables are a rip BTW. Go to Jaycar and tell them what you need it for and get them to recommend the cheapest cable they have that will do the job. It will work just as well as a $$hundreds cable.

Have you tried a firmware update? Seems to be a common problem. http://boardsus.playstation.com/t5/PlayStation-3-General/Sony-Bravia-TV-giving-quot-No-Signal-quot-w ith-my-PS3-via-HDMI/td-p/44380222/page/3 I do find it rather amusing that two Sony devices have trouble communicating! My Panasonic Bluray player was drifting out of sync really badly, updated the firmware and it came good.

As there is no HDMI cable supplied, I first connected them with the composite cable - which worked fine, but doesn't allow 3D operation. The first thing I did was get the update. I found out about cheap HDMI cables later, though I may still take this one back. Hopefully doing some more testing today to try and isolate the problem.

Well you'll probably need to get a HDMI 1.4 compatible cable to do 3D. Though they aren't supposed to put on the box which version the cables conform to. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDMI#Version_comparison I thought I'd solved my Audio/Video sync issues, but after watching the V8's yesterday I noticed the shows after were out of sync! The front speakers have started crackling now. Grr

JB's were selling 42 inch Hi def Lg Plasmas for $695 the other day. I said it earlier in this thread, don't pay top price because the technology keeps changing and the prices keep dropping. At these prices you could have a couple big screen plasmas throughout the house and still be better off than just having one big super-duper brand name LCD/LED.

Re HDMI cables. As the format/standard has changed over time the data rate has increased and the cable has been required to support a higher frequency ie Mhz. The only difference for home audio applications is a lower capacitive coupling (capacitance reduces the signal over distance) a better built cable will have a lower capacitance. Longer the cable the higher the capacitance and the harder it is to make a cable which will meet the standard. Currently the longest cables which work are about 7m. If you have a cable of suitable rating it will almost certainly work. I have tested from $12 to $200 1.5m cables rated correctly with zero difference in performance. HDMI is supporting a digital signal so as long as it gets to the other end it doesn't matter. My dad has a projector and uses a 7m cable which is as long as is possible with HDMI, he has tried 2 cables all supposed to be the correct new format/higher data rate cables but the first cable didn't do the job sometimes worked sometimes didn't, hence why he bought a second cable which has worked perfectly. It sounds to me like you have a cable issue even though you posted it was a 3D HDMI cable so it should work. I would be buying a cheap HDMI cable of suitable rating to test first before sending gear back.

Yup, digital data can either be decoded or it can't, there is no "improvement" in picture quality by spending more on an expensive cable like analogue formats.

No need to spend more than $50 but you'll need to make a decision on whether you need a supple cable ie one that bends easy or do you need right angle connections. Some connections are now lockable which would work better in tight situations.

Took the $79 cable back, started looking at Jaycar for a flexible 1.5 metre 1.4 grade cable - no luck yet. Thought about the right angle, but am going to tie the cable to the centre stand so the cables don't pull when we swivel the screen.
