Get a Samsung Galaxy S, easy to use interface, great features, can surf the web, applications readily available. It will make your life easier.

Just to let you know how thick I am
my current phone is a Nokia 1100. I can mannage that quite well.
I would prefer a Nokia if possible, but willing to try anything.
Was given a Nokia E51 yesterday, and I have no idea how to do anything on it.

Mate ive always had Nokias aswell and liked their menu lay out etc but seriously the samsung galaxy is real freindly. Has buttons for everything so very simple to use but also is capable of doing advanced things if you like. I suggest you go down to a phone store and have a play with one. Weighs close to nothing, thin as paper and has a decent camera, fantastic music player, fantastic video player. Its pretty much a minature computer if that interests you yet the layout is very simplistic but elegant. Cant go wrong mate :-)

+1 for an Android phone.

You might not want to spend the money for a Galaxy S as they are quite high end, but there are lots of good Android phones on the market now.

I would say the Galaxy S's interface adaptation is probably one of the best I've seen though, so is probably worth the extra money.

Don't be scared of touch screen smart phones, they are easy to use and really, really worth having for the email and calendar features alone - especially if your work supports mobile Exchange functionality (and you want to use it for that)

I have a iPhone 3GS (had iPhones since 2007 as part of my job, and they are good, but I think some good Android implementations are now surpassing the iPhone - especially if apps are secondary for you)

I would suggest you avoid an android phone.

Sounds to me like you need something like a new basic Nokia they typically still have a basic unit available with a full key pad that is great for just making phone calls and sending messages.

The Samsung C5220 would probably suit your application if you don't mind a flip phone. It has large buttons, good battery life and supposedly a very good reception suited to regional areas.

Thanks Damian. At least you read my post
I have a Samsung SGH-A412 that I was given, and its not too bad, but I dont use it very often, and tend to forget what I am doing.

I work in an area that doesnt have mobile service, so dont use a mobile very often, so familiarity is a problem for me.

Anyway, thanks for all the comments, I will go and have a look around and see what I can find.

If you're looking for a good current phone that's quite easy to use and would like to stay with Nokia I'd say to get the X6. Very simple to use GUI and if I can get my parents using it alright (both 60+) with not too much hassle I think you should be fine.

I read your post Ian, I just think you are under estimating the value of having a smartphone - you might THINK you only want messaging, pictures and phone calls, but you would probably soon be lost without all the extra features of a smartphone if you used one for a few weeks.

New Nokia phones are I've still got a Nokia phone from 2001 that charges and run perfectly after 9 years, but I went through 3 of the buggers from 2006 to 2007, including a very expensive N70 and will never buy another one. I'm very careful with all my phones, look after them well, these things just stopped turning on, stopped charging, screen stopped working - just junk.

You sure you don't mean Sony Ericsson? My Sony Ericssons had died within a 2 year span. My Nokia N95 was quite a good phone until my daughter got to it (she started eating the phone... she's only 11 months old lol).

The last Samsung I used to have was a PITA to use. Samsung Omnia running Windows mobile software.

There's the problem right there. Not sure what "Windows Phone 7" is like (apart from sales of phones running it being exceptionally low) but the Omnia would of had Windows Mobile 6.1, which is a pile of steaming

Had a play with a Windows 7 mobile a few weeks ago and thought it was very slick. Love the tiles interface.

ROFL

Windows mobile 6.0 was exceptional. Rock solid performance and exceptionally well intergrated/user friendly.

WM 6.1 they must have employ some 12 year olds to reprogram the interface, I don't know what went wrong but it was horrible to use.

WM 6.5 was a huge improvement over 6.1 whilst with many more features ect it still wasn't as reliable or as well intergrated as WM6.0.

Samsung Omnia came out with 6.1 and 6.5 options if you had 6.1 I can understand your frustration but it if had 6.5 I would be surprised.

We trialled a number of Win Mo platforms, can't say I experienced anything I would write home about. Stale, outdated and generally crap. But that's just my opinion :-)

HTC Mozart Windows 7 phone which is a Telstra branded phone.
Very easy to use, excellent camera, easy email and internet and great sound quality.

I have a HTC desire HD which is hands down the best phone I have had but might be a bit over the top if you want something easy to use without taking the time to learn the in's and out's bonus with it is it has a nice big screen and free sat nav built in but it is pricey.

Its funny you say that as I have heard this before but only from people who have used WM5.0 and previous versions or WM6.1.

Those who I know who have used WM6.0 and WM6.5 all seem to agree it is by far the best phone operating system they have used to date.

I currently have a SE X10 and it is horrible heaps of bugs inconsistent interface and the worst battery life I have ever seen in a smart phone (batter doesn't even last 1 day).

The android OS isn't perfect but has some great merits. Sadly the SE implementiaton of android was shocking, considerably worse than the likes of what HTC did with the Desire.

Android 2 on works great on phones - not convinced about its merits on larger devices though - it just lacks any sense of aesthetics on the tablet devices I've tried. Still, it shows promise so no doubt it'll get better quickly.
