The reason I've gone off V'35's is the relatively poor build quality. Obviously I've been spoiled by owning a Soarer, an LS400 and now the Aristo.
The build quality is there in the Merc. and I like the layout inside and the body style of the CLK. If I can trade my car on a 430, I reckon I might do it sooner rather than later.

If it was me I wouldn't be going for the Merc, for the same sort of money you could pick a BMW 330CI. Better performance and still very comfortable. BMW build quality is excellent and servicing is cheaper as well.

Fair enough, I'm not familure enough with the current Merc's to be in a position to comment.

A possible other option for you might be one of the IS series.

Good cars very good build quality and the newer models have quite sporty engines which was the only let down in the original IS series cars.

I'm going to look at the Toyota Mk 2 now. I've never heard of it.

Toyota Mark II is the new chaser i guess.

Come with the 1JZ-GTE VVTI.

You can get one for around $20k-$24k.

Here are some photos of the Mark II IR-V:

So now I've had the chance to drive a 430CLK. What a let down. No grunt at all. What do I have to do to get luxury vehicle with performance, sexy good looks and spend less than $30,000. All I want is something relatively quick, lounge chair comfort and nice and quiet.
Maybe I'm already in it???? No, I want something more modern and less than 100k on the clock. Am I asking too much?
The BMW535i is looking pretty good, but most of them have huge K's.
I'm happy to trade up. Anyone?

Couldn't find any 335ci's Ali, but I have looked at 330ci's and I sure like what I see and what I read about them. Just have to find one nearby so as I can check it out.

The 335's are very nice but a lot more than 30k. The 330 is a great alrounder and look the part too.
I'm considering keeping.the black 328ci that I posted with the other cars before. It's only got 107000ks fully optioned for only 16k.

The current 335 is the "almost as quick as an M3" model isn't it?

To find something that does it all and being a quality well built car the options are very limited. BMW 3 series is a good option but the higher performance models are not cheap.

Would you prefer a saloon car or a coupe?

If you are looking for a coupe how about RX-8.

Damian, I am going to look at a BMW330 coupe on Wednesday. This might make up my mind.
The RX-8 is a bit too out there for me.

Make sure you take it for a Good drive as they take a while to get used to. The Accelerators are usually quite firm compared to Toyotas and when you put your foot down its like they have a 2 stage pedal so make sure its flat to the floor. lol.
If you get the chance take it through some twisty roads, they handle very well but are still very comfortable.

Interesting you say that Rob as one of the reasons I didn't like the Mercs was the soggy throttle response. Drive by wire I think, so it's not a simple matter of adjusting a cable.

Damian, I ended up taking a 2.8L for a drive as the 300ci wasn't available.
Really nice car to drive and to look at, but it was a 98' model which is just a little too early for me and the power is down quite a bit from the 3 litre ( according to my reading ) but it was comfortable, nicely laid out, handled exceptionally well, good throttle response and wonderfully quiet. If I can find a 3 litre in as good a condition I will go for it.
Need to sell mine first though, and to move to Coffs Harbour and settle in.

Fair enough let us know what you end up with.

Coffs is a nice place, I hope you enjoy it.
