The beetles aren't that bad, My wife has one. The Turbo's go like stink, and handling isn't bad and the ride is quite comfortable. Although only a seater, you can fit 2 big blokes in the back reasonably comfortably. Basically VW Golf running gear, so parts are reasonable. They are a pain in the bum to work on, I use a local VW specialist for most things.
Bonus is, you can fit a full pizza in the box on the dash!

Strongly advise to stay well away from the Audi TT unless buying brand new.
The older models have had heaps and heaps of issues and whilst most have been improved they still are having quite a few electrical related failures when 2-3 years old.
S2000, Z4 then MX-5 would be my oder of preference for a smallish convertable.

Hmm, MX-5 would be a good choice for a woman... I've driven a couple of them and if they weren't so girly looking would happily own one, so much fun to drive.

You can stray away from the girlish side pretty easy.

I Tend to agree with Mr Clark on this one, why would you want to spend that sort of money on brand new car?? There are plenty getting around with minimal KMs on the clock and that will offer you considerable savings.
I see you/she does have a pretty solid budget which must be nice. I love convertibles and as much as I would love to roll around in an Audi or BMW convertible I just can justify the cost (at the moment anyway).
I have seen a few of those Nissan Silvia S15 Convertibles getting around and I think they look pretty nice. They are on a good platform, sporty, cheaper (than above) and you can do plenty of the work on them yourself without fear of burning your wallet on parts thanks the good ol SR20DE (sadly not DET version).
Granted they do look a little funny with the roof up (like most convertibles). I reckon the only decent looking convertible when the roof is up are some of the latest 3 series beemers.
