They're no better than any other car make, get off your pedestal.
No better than *some* - clearly Honda, BMW etc. have similar quality control levels to Toyota based on how well they do in annual reliability reports - Subaru however are never very high up the list (Still much better than many other brands though)
I'd still consider owning a Legacy wagon though, they are pretty nice, and I think like any other modern vehicle, they are only as reliable as the effort you put into keeping them maintained.

Fanboyism annoys me, i've seen more R32 / Rb20det skylines take major limiter bash abuse every weekend and never have issues, yet ive seen a few 1jzgte's pop. And don't get me started on the 7mgte...yeah, that was beautiful engineering by toyota, head studs that weren't torqued correctly, you go toyota!
There is WAY too many things that come into play, Tune, How its driven, Previous history, What oil, etc etc, to say one car maker is more reliable than the other simply due to what you've heard and/or experienced is silly. Each manufactuerer has made errors, its just the way it is.
A good friend of mine has a liberty RS wagon with an STI RA motor in it, and just the standard 5speed box, that thing cops MAJOR abuse and never had issues.
therefor, because of my personal experience in this, i can say for fact that WRX gearbox's are made of diamonds and will never, EVER shatter.}
In the end i don't care what it is, if its jap or euro, Rwd, and fun to drive, i'd have it

A good friend of mine has had 2 rebuilt gearboxes in his modified Evo wrx. He isnt making massive power. but he now has straight cut gears from 1st to 4th. He also snapped 3 CV shafts in one launch. I commonly see and hear wrx's with straight cut gears. Pretty sure you wouldnt rebuild them if they were awesome from factory. In saying that. my brother in law had a BEE 4 liberty. It was auto and was tweaked abit. i dont think he drove it as hard as what it could of been. but it had no problems.
But i guess it all comes down to how they have been treated previously and how old they are.

Aiden,
There are different AWD systems and just because one sends most power to the front wheels and they drive like FWD's (ie kluger which is FWD by default using the aurion driveline with a very limited AWD add on) doesn't mean all do.
The EVO AWD system is regarded as the most advanced system in the world.
Followed closely by the lambo/audi AWD system, which is base on torque sensing.
Whilst the subaru system works ok but in that example it only works due to electronic aids which clearly take a long time to respond IMO that certainly isn't great and not good enough for anything other than getting out of a bog hole.
As others have said the subaru gearboxes are the weak link and they are well known for not lasting even with BPU.
I am surprised toyota have redesigned another manufactures engine when they already have a good line up of engines available. I can appreciate the collaboration of manufactures to produce better and cheaper cars but this still this doesn't add up.
