Just thought i would update my mates capri .

Built 1uz with twin 3540 0.6 housings on 27psi boost running E85 . 2 speed glide Chance convertor from the USA .

I have known Joe for 15 years and this is a genuine legal street car thats driven alot . Driven to the track, chages rear tyres and has just run a string of 8 second passes .

Previously on pump 98 it made 670rwhp on 22psi and ran 9.02 @ 151,5mph .

Now on E85 and 27psi boost she made 800rwhp and ran a best of 8.48 @ 159mph .

That shows just how good the 1uz can be ladies and gentle men . I help out at race meetings where i can so i thought i would share it with you :-)

Jeez. Look at the engine bay on that thing. And when it takes off, poof and it's gone! Crazy

Certainly no doubt these engines are great with some boost on their side.

Lol, you 2 obviously have no idea ... This car has been running the 1/4 for over 15 years and has over 1000 passes under its belt ( or "chassis " ,lol ) :-) . From an 11 second car to amid 10 second car for many years with a 302 windsor , to this twin turbo 1uz .

It will last another 20 years running these times .

Like i said it is a genuine street car but is tech inspected to run 8.0's .

60' was 1.291 to 1.30 .

Must have had some serious reinforcing work done then as every Capri I've ever seen has been welded and bolted together like a paper hat (like pretty much every 70's Ford really)

Quite an impressive machine.

Come to think of it,

My mechanics 1UZTT (~650rwkw) supra drag car is doing similar times, 8.77 sec is the last best time he has done to my recollection. I wonder what he will do this season. Hmmm.

Day 1 of track championship today , Dropped the cats and mufflers on the car it went a new PB of 8.38 @ 162.5mph ! His brother broke the beams with his foot and DQ'd the pass so it didnt count .

2nd pass blazed the tyres and was backed right out . Then Backed up with an 8.46 @ 162.5mph with a softer 60' .

Qualified number 2 in Super Sedan ! Not bad 1st meet out with the new setup :-)

See how it goes with 1 more qualifier and in racing tomorrow .

FREAKS everyone out when we put the pipes and tyres back on and drive it home ...

Danny we missed you at shish on thursday mate

Rob if anyone apart from Joe drove it to the shops it would be fun, he leaves all the wheels up and burning rubber for the track

the 1UZ copped a little stick back in Street Machine a month or 2 back but they have been really interested in doing a feature on the car and let's just say its about time we are organising a photoshoot with them in the next few weeks, and the 1UZ should get a little more exposure for the great engine it is.

we have been talking for the last few days and Joe isn't happy (most would be running 8.3's), you aint seen nothing yet by early next year the car should be putting out some serious numbers, bigger exhaust housings, cdi and wheelie bars are being fabbed up. we are looking at doing another long block and the heads are going to be alot more special we are making 290cfm with factory valves and a very mild port now, we still have a fair bit to get out of these heads. GOMAC who did our engine and the engine for the Piranha Racing team was getting 330-350cfm out of the heads with a 1mm oversize valve. because we run the stock bottom manifold we haven't been able to go as crazy as what he could. the lil 4L that Greg did back 10 years ago was making 900hp on 20psi with a blower, had it been turboed i reckon u would have seen over 1000hp. unfortunately Greg doesn't do the engines anymore but our fabricator spent a bit of time with Greg and knows how he was porting the heads back then as he used to flow em for him.

ok, its been a little while since last update. some good news and some bad news. we took the car down to V&E Rigoli, we had Vince install a new EMS 250mj CDI for us, we were going to start pumping some serious power and boost out of the car soon so we thought we better be prepared.

it was time for tuning as we installed the bigger exhaust housing on the turbo going from a .63 to a 1.06 but it sure wasn't the best day for it, dyno area was 35.5 degrees celsius and 27% humidity so we weren't expecting big numbers. the engine breathed alot better the idle was up 400rpm over usual. being so hot and dry we weren't expecting too much. the combination of the new EMS CDI and the bigger housings saw the little girl kept asking for more fuel, almost 20% more than the previous E85 tune, and that tune was on quite a cool night not a hot day like this.

after bit of fiddling around and the intake pipe blowing off on a 15psi run, it was time to turn up the wick, 25psi she rattled off an 810rwhp (605rwkw) 26psi - 833rwhp (620rwkw) and now this was were the bad luck came in. we completely forgot to get new springs we only remembered yesterday. being a Turbonetics RaceGate it's harder to find springs compared to the TurboSmart stuff, so we were stuffed. we couldn't get get to boost to go any higher than 27psi we wanted to go to 30psi, however at 27psi it made 867rwhp (646rwkw) the turbo's just wanted more boost, picking up 23rwhp then 34rwhp each lbof boost we went higher. the power was just waiting to come, unfortunately our bad memories let us down needless to say we are still happy, considering how hot the day was, we think it should see 900rwhp (670rwkw) on a nice cool night, where it can use all that fuel. we compared it to one of the previous E85 27psi tunes with similar AFR's and well im sure you can see how much of a gain was made with half a psi less.

because of the bigger housings the turbo's come on about 500-700rpm later. we stalled it up just on the footbrake and it seemed to come on just as fast as it did before, so we are happy about that. we were worried putting so much bigger rear housings on a 4L it will be very laggy. but it drives and feels just as good.

had we had a nice cool day and the wastegate springs, we are confident of seeing close to 950rwhp (710rwkw) on 30psi. Vince had some of his Methanol out, it was very tempting to just throw some in, and see alot more it won't be enough to run our 7-sec pass next Saturday, but we should run an 8.0-8.1@168+mph which will see us back into the APSA Top 10 for Modified Street Blown. this little 4L Lexus/Toyota engine is an absolute animal, as Vince and a couple guys said put a Manual or an Auto gearbox that has less driveshaft losses it would see at least another 100rwhp (75rwkw) at the tyres.

a big thanks to Vince for his expertise in tuning and electrical work. also EMS for the fantastic 250mj CDI.

no PB's this weekend, but still had a fantastic weekend. by far the best Pro Street event held in Sydney. well done to the APSA, Paul Beck, WSID and everyone involved.

big thanks for Danny (dieseltrain) for coming out, made everything alot smoother with alot more laughs

the car is also featured in this month's Street Machine, also a story on another 1000+hp Hilux

we had a few issues with the plugs on the 1st pass, then it hit boost cut on the second. played around with boost off the lights starting with 16psi was blazing the tyres a couple passes, drop it down to 14psi it took off ok lifted the tyres a little so he backed off it a split second and got back into it. ran
8.53@164 with a slow 1.4 60', they say 1/10th in the 60' is usually 2/10th in the deep end had it 60'd it's usual 1.28 and no back off it would have bettered it's PB, even though it was running rich as, AFR's were around 10.9-11.3 going down the track which is fat compared to what it should be running. we were hoping for 6 passes but time got away from us and they could only manage to squeeze out 4 passes for everyone. back out for a Private Test Day mid-June we are hoping to do some numbers then. car was actually a lil heavier also, last couple meets ran without the passenger seat. got down to 3025lbs. it's now back up to 3100lbs, new box is a lil heavier also.

they had a dyno at the event so we thought why not run it up, was free and all warmer day so would be fatter again made 800rwhp with 10.6 AFR :lol funnily enough it was the 2nd highest of the day, so won a trophy for that and also came second in the Top BodyWork category, was a little bonus for not PB'ing

apparently u can't run factory shocks like we do on the car and run 8's. u need to run 90/10's and u can't drive a car on the street with 90/10's or it will flip, amazing how we didn't know this. so, here we are having a little joke about it. there is some swearing, so cover your ears

hey guys/girls, well a little bit of good news the Capri is up for the 2011 Street Machine of the Year award. we are ecstatic and honoured to have been nominated. we are hoping some of the guys here can get behind us, spread the word and vote for the car. a 1UZ engined car in Street Machine mag is very rare let alone up for Street Machine of the Year. it's not the typical type of car you will see in Street Machine, but we hope people will respect the street car aspect and what has been done with the car. the link to vote is
http://www.smoty.com.au/comps/smoty2011/viewmachine.aspx?Code=MI10 hopefully we can get the word out and the Toyota/Lexus community gets behind us.
