The new ecoboost falcon with 184kW and solid torque figures, combined with 40mpg fuel consumption sounds pretty phenomenal. Do you think it will become,at some time in the future, a similar cult car to say the VL Turbo or the XR6 turbo?353Nm at only 2000rpm, and a curb weight similar to the Soarer (1648kg) suggests a pretty reasonable package in a family sized car. The answer to my question probably lies in how strong the motor is, in terms of how much power can be squeezed out of it with out it popping. We shall see over the next few years, but i suspect that it has an alloy block, so may be limited, depending on design. Still , the SR20 is good for 300rwkw without problem on an alloy block, so we will wait and see.

When you say SR20 is good for 300rwkw, do you mean standard motor or upgraded Internally because I doubt the whole motor would handle that power for long day in day out. Maybe 200rwkw is better. Also 2.0L Engine Hauling around a 1650kg car I'm keen to see how the car actually feels to drive rather than on paper figures, but it seems like a nice car for normal non performance economy cruising. I'd stick with the 4.0L 6Cyl Falcon.

Cult car, no. Its not that good or that fast. It will keep up with any of the 4.0L motors, but not the LPi or the Turbo 6. The car does handle better, not so much weight over the front makes it want to turn in a bit better, and it is happy to come on boost and rev. Downside, it only comes in Auto. I would take one over the petrol 6, any day, BUT the LPi is the best of the bunch. A XR6 LPi would be the pick of the bunch. The worst part about it? Its the same price as the 6. No incentive to buy it at all.

Apart from fuel economy and a broader torque band from 1500rpm . Crazy little engines . To me it's like an new Toyota 86 ... New design , looks cool , sounds cool , but is slower than current market specs , and that's where it stays . I reckon people who buy them probably won't be that impressed after a few years owning them stock . The xr6t is always ready to improve upon ... Just sayin

Liquid Petroleum Injection . Returns 12.5l / 100km gas . Produces 198kw and 409 nm torque . With the 6 speed zf it's the pick . And is a cheaper purchase option than the Eco boost ! Not bad Blake

If anything probably will be a great motor to rip out of the Falcon and put into an old lightweight Celica that is where it will shine. Holden should have brought back the Calais Turbo that would have been an instant Cult Car over again.

Friend of mine works for Ford as a prototype test driver. I've driven a few of these eco-boost engines over the last year. One thing is going to put a stop to making easy bolt on power with the ecoboost engine - the turbocharger is cast into the exhaust manifold. Bit of work changing it all. It will probably be done though.

Geez thats a quick way to not make any friends quickly. I think the popularity of xr6T and VL was the ease to extract power, however that will definately make it a more labour intensive and costly job to swap turbo

No Problem, Aftermarket Manifold+Turbo problem solved, without a doubt your going to get "purists" wanting to get the most powerful 2.0L Falcon in the world so there's a market for this stuff. Yeah Josh with the VL It's more of like a day and night difference when you compare the old 202 Junk it replaced of the VK probably that made it a cult car. With small mods on the VL, an easy 200-220rwkw and your going low 12 second 1/4 miles too bad Genuine VL Calais turbos are pretty much non existant today.

| My VL Berlina, Bought April 86, wasn't even in the show room then, bought it from the Dealers back car lot. The Turbo's were not released for a little while, and were quicker than the Dinosaur stock push rod V8.

Its a great idea Mike, but for the same price as the 6? Most company owners just walk away. If it was 2-2.5k cheaper, I think there would be a lot more sales.

It will certainly be attractive to fleet buyers just using the cars to get from A to B saving them money. But for the average consumer, I'm not so sure. There's nothing wrong the the Aussi built 4.0 6cyl engine ,or even the equivalent commodore 6cyl @ 9.1L/100km and fuel economy isn't "bad" at 12L/100km. Like many have said, i think the only way this car will sell is if it's price point is cheaper than the 6cyl.

As Dan said the LPi is better for fleet, and that is what they buy. But even then, the Falcon and Commodore are slowly dropping sales.

If this car is to be used for any sort of fleet driving that turbocharger better be reliable. If anything for a economy fleet car they should have made a 2.0L non turbo, bit less fuel and no turbo there to fail or require servicing, plus they can actually sell it cheaper then. If anything I reckon the turbo is just there so they can call it a fancy name like Ecoboost.

a 2L non turbo wasnt made, as the 2L GTDI engine was already available to be packaged into the Falcon, as it is in other powertrains through out the world, and will be in Future programs too. Would have cost too much to develop a new small engine for the falcon solely.

The big reason for it, is that it is not Gas. There is still a bad stigma attached to LPG. This gives an alternative, but one that no one was really asking for. Now the Ecoboost in the Mondeo, well thats a different story. Same motor, lighter car, much better. Looking forward to the Focus ST arriving as well.

Haha well that totally undermines the point of the bigger Falcon. Anyone would be a fool to get one over a more well proportioned, lighter Mondeo! |
