Hi guys,

Just wondering if anyone can tell me if the GTR's used in the days of Bathurst were simply stock or modified? Like were they pushing more boost, turbo upgrades etc? Just wanted to know the specs of the cars they were using to race against the competition.

Cheers :-)

VERY modified..

over 130 PSI fuel rail pressure (mechanical pump)

and LOTS of boost...

That's all I can remember, I can get more specs if you want, my bud used to work on it..

the engines had forged internals.. In fact they had two engines, one for qualifying, and short events, and one for endurance races. The engines had slightly different internal components.
When qualifying , they use to wind the boost up big time, so they would qualify on pole. Then they would change the turbos for the race(at lower boost), so that it was racing on a fresh pair of turbos.
If you ever get a chance to see one in the flesh, they are just awesome(for twenty years ago).
They also had the ability to change the percentage drive to the front wheels on the go, so could vary how the car launched and how it handled, depending on the track conditions.
They had about 550hp for qualifying(sometimes 600hp) and they used to race at around 480hp, from memory.

Though i did read one article that suggested they removed the Attessa 4wd system and just ran it full time 4wd, but i'm not sure on that.
One i saw had two identical fuel pump systems, so that if one pump failed, the driver saw the light come on, and could switch to the other pump. Great for endurance events, i bet.

Far out no wonder they kept on winning so much. Wish I was around back in the days to see this all for myself :-) Hopefully Nissan does alright in the V8 Supercar series, although I bet it will be nothing like the good old days.

I've got detailed pictures of this car when I saw it earlier in the year at the Philip Island Historics. Not much of it resembles a factory car in anyway shape or form.

Here are three quick ones
When you look at them up close, you understand why they did so well, it resembles nothing remotely close to a road car. Air jacks, and an underside with ducting and oil coolers everywhere. Full time 4x4 by the looks of it.

That looks amazing, no wonder they were banned competing haha would love to have driven one! Imagine if Toyota did the same thing with soarer's and supra's and let the 1 & 2jz's compete. Would be amazing!

They pretty much built a no expense spared race car.
I heard they gave them extra weight when they started winning all the time, up to about 150 kilograms, but they still kept winning! hahaha

Toyota often have superb engines, but their chassis often isn't as good as it's Nissan counterparts.
That said, a Supra rally car

you can see in the 1st,2nd and 4th images above of the GTR(posted by James), two sets of bars and rose jointed rods that cross over the valve cover. These are in place to stop the turbo manifolds sagging, due to the weight and the high temperatures for hours on end.(this 'sagging' actually occurred early on, hence the need for these crane like suspended rigs.)
Look at the pipe work and the beautiful heat coverings/wrappings. Top shelf stuff, and as i said, it was twenty years ago! Pure art!

Nice observation, quite logical when you think about it!

I thought they ran electrical fuel pump setups , but ran dry sump , hence the mechanical driven pump ?

And up to 650hp in qualifying guise .

They weren't banned specifically, Group A (for touring cars) worldwide was dying and being replaced by new formulas for Aus it was replaced by Group 3A which became the V8 Supercars), that just happened to coincide with the GTRs killing everything at Bathurst

And Toyota did race Supras at Bathurst, albeit with MA70s that weren't quite as competitive as the RS500s and R32s

The racing GTR also had water spray to cool its brakes.
The front diff engagement was on a time delay at the start of a race, allowing the rear wheels to spin until the engine hit its torque lump, then bam, the front diff engaged and the car just launches like a cut cat.
It had a pump and oil cooler for each of the trans, both diffs, and the transfer case!
Daniel is correct- the car made 630hp at 28psi until 1992, when they were limited to 19psi (450hp).
The engine had a factory crank, replaced every rebuild. The blocks were nismo units, strengthened with extra webbing. Nismo rods for sprint races, carillo rods for endurance events.
Compression was 9.5:1.
the gearbox was a six speed holinger, worth $20K.

The Bathurst GTR's cost over $600,000.00, on the grid.
