Wrong forum to ask! If we are Commo freaks, this forum better rename as Commodore Forum.

The reason I asked the question is that I've been part of the soarer community for 3 years now, some of the older members of ALSC know me. In that time I've come to realise that soarers owners, in general tend to know a lot about cars, especially the technical aspect. Given that I don't belong to many forums, and my scans around the commodore forums have found them mainly to be a pile of pants and a generally lower standard, I thought it wouldn't hurt to throw it out there. I knew there would be plenty of sledging but one or two of you have posted some really useful stuff about a car nobody knows anything about outside your country, so thanks for the advice. Adam you raise a good point, what exactly am I after. Well, I'm looking for something local, fairly recent e.g. 97 onwards, at least 200kw, V8 preference, but a reliable day to day runner as I'll be pottering around Sydney and local area. My budget is around $15k which I know isn't much but its all I can afford, so any other suggestions gratefully accepted! Thanks to everyone who contributed so far.

In my opinion the Statesman versions of these cars are much better but may not fit your budget. I have to agree with Ryan, the old VL was the best of them but are a bit long in the tooth now. Funny that the best ones used Nissan running gear.

Alastair, your other option may be to look at a VT supercharged V6 Commodore. You may find something in your price bracket. Check out the Trading posts, or Carsales.com.

15k, I'd probably look for a VS SS (96-early 97) (they're only 5L, though) if you want a commie, Or an early VT 5L, but the early VT's had issues. Or for that money you'd get a decent '31. (or a '32 if you get lucky)

Why a Commodore at all?? If you want a 4 door, why not a Celsior? Or do you want a "kangaroo's, meat pies and Holden cars", experience. lol.

I thought I already cleared that up, a celsior isn't going to give me 220kw is it!! Maybe the best thing to do would be try a few of them and see for myself. I like the idea of the supercharged V6 but it doesn't pull the same kind of power, same story with the series 1 5 litre. I wonder how much it would be to up a VT SS to around 300kw... Also, what would you say was good mileage for an ozzie car thats about 6 years old? I know you guys do lots of miles over there. I was thinking anything under 100km would be good?

Al......Average mileage over here is somewhere around 20,000 Kms a year, so anything under 100,000 Kms would be good.

Hmm there was a supercharged Celsior that went for less than you're looking at not so long ago. It'd be close to the power level required.

My cousin works for Holden, and gets all types of Drive cars. The VY SS, I really liked, in terms of brute power, but that was it, handled like crap, and teh build quality, oohh Lord, what a piece of Junk. I like the int, and the look of it, but geez, felt ike something built in the 70's and had aged. There was wind noise coming from the windscreen, rattles and noises, this car only had 2,000kms on it. I drove the new LS2 Clubsport, and to say the least, i liked teh SS better! It felt so big and heavy, ohh, like i was driving an Isuzu truck! The power is all it had, even tho i pulled 2 cars on him in my IS hahaha. All they are good for is burnouts! haha. 4 Door, V8 97+ for 15k? hmm Dont think you will get far with that spec and budget.

I had a look on Carsales for Holdens and found two in NSW, a 2000 and 2001 5.7L, one with over 100K and the other over 150K on the clock: http://www.carsales.com.au/pls/carsales/!cs_content.dealer_results?price_min=&price_max=15000&category_id=1&search_type=21&make_id=10&model_ id=&keyword=&state_id=2&selected_region=0®ion_id=104&search_postcode=&search_distance=25®o_veh icle_id=&segment_id=&cs_body_id=&drive_id=&km_min=&km_max=&year_min=1997&year_max=&door_num=&cs_tran s_id=&cylinder_num=8&engine_low=5000&engine_high=

Alastair, just coz you get 300kw (at the flywheel, I presume that's where you are referring to) in a Commodore, it won't do much if it weighs almost two tons. My stock 1450 kg pov pack TT will easily take on a 220 kw commie. I've once dragged a monaro off the lights, although wasnt sure what engine version he's had, and beat him too. One thing about Commodores (and Falcons for that matter) is that every new model that comes out, they increase the stock power by say 40 kW or something like that. Great, but that really won't help the performance side of things if they add an extra 150 kilos to it. Happens all the time to every single model. Basically, it is fair to say a 1996 SS will have the roughly the same performance figures as a 2002 model, even though they have quite a few kW difference betweeen each other. It is just a marketing thing to say, yep, this car is more powerful on paper (or dyno). If you still insists on getting a V8 with 250kW or whatever, well, a VR SS with 195kW will go just as fast for less. Holdens are very poorly built. If you're used to driving something like a Soarer, well, I suggest you drive a tractor in UK a little bit just before you come here, it will be pretty much same driving experience, at least you won't get as much of a shock.

Nah, most tractors are much better built than Holdens.
