In my less sensible moments, I've been thinking about trying to import a 1JZ-GTE engined JZX81 into the UK -- just because I think it would be a laugh to drive something that looks like a 1980s Japanese s***-box, but has 280 bhp under the bonnet. :-)

I can't find any information on the differences between the three models -- Chaser, Mark II, and Cresta. Is it just cosmetic, or is one likely to have more toys, and another a more sporty set-up, for example?

Phil's right, you can't go past the Russian site for info on the Japanese imports. The engine combinations are available in most models although the Chaser (hence the name) is associated with the faster or more powerful models. The MarkII is more of a family saloon, frequently available in diesel and the 2.0 litre 4-cyl petrol. The Cresta is somewhere in between, and is my choice in terms of body shape if not specification.

Thanks Phil. I've seen the specs on that site and on www.alljapanesecars.com , although I still can't tell Chaser from Mark II from Cresta just by seeing a picture :-)

Cheers Mike, that helps. I'd assumed that the Chaser was the "sports" version, since it's usually the one that's used for drifting, but I couldn't find anything to tell me why Toyota made three apparently identical 4-door saloons on the same platform and with the same engine options.
