| A question for all you Canberra people.I may have an opertunity for a job in Canberra, and I was wondering costs of housing-buy and rental, best place to live etc. I dont have young kids, so schooling not an issue. The weather doesnt bother me, so no need to comment on that. |

| I feel like I am supposed to be an expert because I have lived here over thirty years but the problem is I have neither rented nor purchased here since 1976 so in fact I know comparatively little. I think you will get more useful information out of www.allhomes.com.au than out of me on your first two topics. Practically anywhere is good to live, depending on how far you slip into the Canberra mould of believing that any drive over twenty minutes must be a nightmare. Pick a region somewhere in the same third of Canberra as where you expect to work and adjust according to your ability to afford it. You might also consider Jerrabombera just over the border but closer to the centre than are Canberra's outer suburbs. From newspaper reports I believe that rental cost is comparatively high here at the moment. Apart from that, living here is pretty easy and exquisitely low in traffic noise compared with Sydney or Melbourne. Try not to run over any cyclists though; the local lobby takes that very badly. Should I mention that there are couple of people here who could probably look after your Soarer OK? Are you coming over here at Easter or is that too late to look around? |

| Hi Ian - let us know where the job is located and we can suggest some suburbs nearby that are good to live in (or good to avoid). |

| Jerrabomberra is a great place to live Ian - we've been there for over 3 years now and love it. Kate can tell you how good the local pub is too!! It takes about 10 minutes to get into the middle of Queanbeyan, 15 minutes to Fyshwick, 15 minutes to Kingston/Manuka, 20 minutes to Woden, 20 minutes to Tuggeranong and 20 minutes into Civic. |

| We've noticed a certain gold soarer in the carpark there quite a few times when we've been heading home on Friday arvos Kate (hehehehe) - also, you were telling Craig Webber the other day about the good beer there!!! I love the small country town feeling too and the wide main roads. A friend of mine is renting in Jerra at the moment and she's found that rental prices for houses in Queanbeyan and Jerra are pretty much the same. |

| Given Canberran's have a higher average income than just about anywhere in Australia, SOMEBODY's gotta be doing OK. The only problem with that is, everybody you buy anything off here seems to think everybody else in Canberra is filthy rich, meaning they charge like wounded bulls for most things. That, and the fact that due to a relatively low population, resulting in not a lot of competition. |

| This is unimportant but "Canberrans have the highest incomes" is a statistical accident, not differentiating fact. The place is broadly middle class, without a mass of really poor or really rich bits. The incomes are consistent with the average education levels and nature of jobs, just like any middle class suburb in any capital city, and many of you live in them. It is as if you took any bunch of middle class suburbs from Sydney and decided to drop them out in the bush. Costs have changed too. Once, shopping was cheaper in Sydney but now it is so only if you go to the cheaper bits of Sydney. Compare with Sydney CBD or inner North suburbs (I do not know the South) and you are better off buying in Canberra, from a coffee to clothes to goods. If this sounds like I really like the place, perhaps I should mention that we plan to move out pretty soon . I came from a beach suburb and I'm going back to the sea.

Don't mis-quote me David. I didn't say Canberrans had the HIGHEST incomes. I said they had "a higher AVERAGE income than just about anywhere in Australia", and statistical accident or otherwise, it is nevertheless, a fact. |

| No probs Ollie, I was addressing one of those general statements I hear from time to time and sorry if it looked as if I were responding to your thread directly rather than by association. |
