Everyone here has got a point I must say. You have to enjoy your life, and if you are passionate about certain things in life then by all means go and pursue it. If it is cars that you love, then get yourself a sweet ride if it makes you happy. As far as money is concerned, alone will not make you happy, it certainly helps though, but I wouldn't rely on it all my life. Good relationship with your friends, family, kids etc is far more valuable then any sort of wealth you might have.

You also have to look at everything realistically. Firstly cars and debt don't mix, as I've painfully learnt 4 years ago when straight out of uni I had a 20K loan against a car which depreciated down to 14K (AUII Fairmont), at a time when I wanted to buy a house, that put a huge dent in my borrowing capacity. All got resolved eventually thanks to my parents bailing me out, even though they told me not to get a car in the first place. 3 years later what I've realised is, my property almost tripled in value (thank you WA economy!!!) to a point where effectively I can draw out craploads of money out of the mortgage to get any mods I would like on the car. Not that I do that as I am happy with my stockie, but still, I reckon buy a house or whatever other investment first, get a car off of it later, as only then you will have a lot more freedom to get whatever you like. Young people wont listen to that though. When you're 18, or 21, cars are more important to you, as they provider a higher level of emotional satisfaction. You grow out of it though sooner or later, and you realise your priorities. Either way, it's good to give a well meant advice, but I didn't listen, and so will not most of the other young people out there unfortunately.

P.S. I would definately not go for a girl that is just attracted to my car. Without offending the actual knowledgeble ladies here on this forum that actually are into cars, you are the exception. But a lot of the other chicks that do go for guys based on their cars, well, let's just say they're just good for one thing that's all. My 2c

IN the Finance industry, however am starting to think what could have been even if i was say ~30% more responsible.

And that's a problem why exactly?? Or is the "thing" your thinking of different to what i'm thinking? lol

If they are that shallow to go out with you because of the car you drive, they deserve to have their legs pinned back behind their ears to get a ride in it!

Shane I agree with you 100% mate.

That is not a problem at all Reepa, well, not if you're 18 or 20. A guy at that age really is only after the u-know-what, and a sweet car more or less helps in that respect. When you're in mid 20s things are different and you do actually look for a stable relationship, where the girl is not shallow and easy etc etc. as you'd like to know she is in it for you and not for the car.

P.S. Just to make it clear I've never used my car to pick up

ahhh....so THATS what i was doing wrong!!! 1st car - mini clubman that dad & i rebuilt, sprayed it purple. 2nd car - EH holden, completely original. the only good thing about both of those cars was that the girls' dad was more likely to love my car than the girl when i picked them up/dropped them home.

i just re-read my first post, fixed up a couple of spelling mistakes...and it hit me - MY GOD, I'M GETTING OLD!!!

Good post Avin. Nothing wrong with going nuts modifying a car but it's not worth getting into debt for. Whatever I spend on my Soarer (which has been a lot over the last few years) I make sure at least the same amount goes into my savings account. I am at a different stage to many as I'm 31 and getting married in October but if I'd started that saving strategy years ago I'd be so much better off and I'd still have a modified car... it just would have taken a bit longer.

May I suggest that people re-read my original response with regards to the 'females judging men on cars'. I did state that this was a first impression, not a final assessment on the person or the basis for a relationship.

The second part of my response was in reply to this forum encouraging modifications. Please re-read the original posts as they were intended. You may see the humour in it.

If people mis-interpret my comments, maybe it's the way it was read. I think this whole thing is SOOOO INTERESTING. An excellent way of assessing how variety of people interpret and respond to the one comment.

Good read :-)

I am only 23, have a fiance, block of land, just about finished uni and will leave with no hecs debt and I have a VERY modified car (although I do everything myself still costs a lot). Also I am an accountant and also studying financial planning which I think is quite ironic considering my own spending habits :-)

But just because you spend money on your car that you may not get back when you sell does not mean it is wasted. Everything costs money in life and it is up to each person to decide what they spend it on. Ie. My friends may think I am wasting money on my car and I may think that they are wasting money traveling when you return with no money and nothing to show for it. However, you do have the memories of good times and life experience. There are pros and cons of all spending decisions but as long as you are having fun doing what you are doing then that is all that matters. Of course you are going to need money for other things as well so keep that in mind when you want to buy those new wheels etc. Budgeting is the key :-)

Also, re anyone who buys a car to pick up “chicks”, that is the textbook definition of poser!

You have to take a balanced approach to life. There are some things which you will not get a chance at doing when you are older for whatever reason. For example, my gf told me the other day she wants to get a SAAB convertible now at the age of 25, only because she reckons if she doesnt get it now she will have to wait till she's 40 or something. (Apparently u can't fit baby seats in those cars, not sure what she's implying by that ) but like travelling overseas when you're young, you only get that chance once early in your life so sometimes it deosnt matter that it cost you heaps, you got experiences to draw on for the rest of your life. Oh well, too many life lessons being discussed here hehehehe.

Being in the demographic that Avin pointed out. I bought my Soarer when I was 20 years old... (1999), still in Uni, working part time and generally quite poor. I did take out a $16k loan (Car was $21k at the time) on top of the money I already had, so the pressure of a debt hanging over you while working out a fresh import (there were less than 50 in Melb at the time). Back then there was no forums/resource, so you had to try stuff yourself to see if it worked. Needless to say it was expensive. Always trying to put good plugs, oil... searching the net to why my rear suspension was squeaking like a mofo (I think I was the first person to bring up this issue in ladman forums way back...) I tried replacement nolothane which crapped itself after a year... then eventually got some 2nd hand supra control arms and called it a day. Alot of cash spent for a poor Uni student...

Add to that... My colourful driving history... crashes (which I've documented on the old forums), power upgrades... It's a whole crapload of money (over 1/2 of what the car originally cost).

HOWEVER.

Now that I'm 26 and have owned the car for 6 years running... Would I do it again?

Dammn right I would.

The money spent on the car has payed for itself tenfold. I've met alot of friends. Made alot of contacts for work and have generally enjoyed beating people at the lights. Doing mountain runs uphill when the 180sx in front of you has no choice but to let you pass because he doesnt have the low down torque to power out of corners.... Going downhill and being glad you spent that extra bit of cash on brake pads while every other car is fading in the distance. Passing a series 6 RX7 down the straight at calder park after he came into a corner too hot and lost exit speed...

These types of experiences can not be replaced. I'm glad I did all of this when I was 20-22 as it was HEAPS of fun even though I went thru three sets of tires in a year once... Dammn SO2's were the sexiest tires ever made...

I paid off my car in 4 years instead of 5. Saved up a year for that Alchohol/drinking/travelling phase (which I did thoroughly enjoy). Oversea's trips are awesome when you're loaded with cash and going with mates. I'm sure alot of the guys here remember me during my binge drinking/strippers/bar hopping phase. That was awesome as well, but my body just cant maintain it...

So here I am... And now I'm on to my 2nd house...

Some things change, but some things stay the same.

I still got the Soarer and I'm still modding it.

Toan.

Personally i dont really give a It's my money i will spend it how i want to!!!

I would rather spend money on myself then on other people.

I buy things for my car, i pay the person who i get them off (neil), he buys more stuff... And so on, it's one big happy cycle...

So people it's your own money and life! do what you want with it!

Are you serious? Are they hard to sell or something? I mean I'm not surprised, I hate SAABs myself. They're fugly, underpowered, FWD and too expensive for what they are...

Haha yeah that baby seat comment, it did shock me when I heard it I must admit... Good thing is she isn't in a big hurry to get one, and I will see in roughly say 2 weeks if I'm saved or not Just figured that maybe I can convince her to get a soarer instead, I'll use my best ability at replicating a salesman's pitch by saying "this fine automobile also comes with 2 child seat restraint hooks as standard, you won't find that on a pos SAAB"

I think the point being brought across is that nothing is black or white.

Avin puts forth the truth to never extend yourself past your financial means. Which is a realistic fact of life.

The counter arguement to that is where do you stop having fun if you cant spend money. Whether it be on cars or drugs or hookers?

At the end of the day, it's the individual's priorities and perception of worth of the car that defines how much you spend on it.

If I made a Thread devoted to young drivers. I'd tell them not to get a Soarer as a first car. These things are death traps in the wrong inexperienced hands.

i learnt this the hard way - and i wasnt even a P-plater.

my advice is more INEXPERIENCE/INATTENTION + RWD TURBO + AUTO + WET ROAD = BAD.

i did make a post about it on the old ALSC forums, with the intention of warning other young/new owners (i'd only had the car 8 days)...should see if i can dig it up.
