Hey guys.

Just after a bit of advice.

I'm looking at a change in employment very soon, and would like a little advice about salary "packages".

There is one job I have applied for that involves a salary package (looks very attractive), in which a phone and car/petrol will be a part.

Now my question is...how does an employer put a value per annum on a car or phone? (obviously not taking into account fuel or talk time) Let's say a new commodore wagon?

Basically I am trying to figure out what I would be left with after these things are taken into account, to see if it is worth my while making the leap into the big smoke(sydney).

Cheers

Jason, it depends on what conditions are put on usage of car and phone.
In the company I work for, if you take a vehicle allowance instead of a company car, it can vary between $10,000, and $15,000 per year.
I have a car, as I usually get what I want, no restriction on usage, so I did not look at the other option. My phone is a breakdown phone as well, so is 24/7 deal.

Jason,

I'd personally be looking at the increased cost of living in Sydney. I don't know anything about it, but I've heard it's pretty costly.

You can usually "cash out" a car for approx $12,000 pa. Best thing is you could cash it out this year and then get a company car next year. You can also usually put your partner in the car and still drive your private car. Guess it depends if you'll be driving as part of work.

The car package usually includes servicing, insurance, RACV (or similar) and tyres so if you do big km's or lay down lots of rubber these are considerable. You might also be able to buy misc things like car wash, engine oil etc as part of the package, and these might accidentally end up in you other car. You usually have to pay for ALL non base model features out of your own packet which is not so good ie mats, car kit, roof rack, tow pack.

I don't know much about packaged phones, although if your private phone number (mobile or home) are required for work ie. if their is an emergency you are contacted, a portion of your bill is tax deductible so take that in to account also.

Trusty accountants deal with the purchase and depreciation value. From your point of view:
  • Is the car [phone] fully maintained (i.e. you have no costs for business use)?
  • What (if any) are the limitations on non-business use and what is the value of this to you?
  • What are you offered as an alternative?

No-one here can legally offer you advice unless they are an accountant or licensed financial planner, and have taken into account your specific circumstances. Therefore, get some answers on direct and probable costs and make your own analysis or take them to someone who can advise you.

Speaking in general terms, phone packaging is a no-brainer while car packaging is still profitable for both parties if it is done on a minimum cost basis. Where the employer outsources the packaging to another company and the employee pays the fee for that service, the margins can get pretty slim, as I found when analysing the options for my wife some years ago.

In my own case I dropped the package and took the money after about six years with BHP mainly because I found they cars they were offering too boring to withstand any longer. If you are retaining your Soarer as well then you do not have the same issue.

Congratulations on the offer, by the way

Hrmm, well that certainly takes a fair chunk out of the salary.

It would be driven daily as part of field service work. But there are no restrictions on the car/phone, full personal use.
Problem is, I would only want it for work. I have a personal car and phone. I would much prefer to be remunerated in the bank rather than with goodies.

Oh well, we'll see what they say.

Too quick for me, David! I'm a little slow tonight :-)

It wasn't really an offer, just one that I found while trawling that suits my skills perfectly.

Had some recent changes at my current place of work (business changed hands), and looking for a way out. I don't think I can cope with the new changes (in management...)

Your offer sounds you are a photocopier technician, like myself, I just got a promotion to be a field technician, now i could take a commodore wagon or take what they call a walking allowance (be a technician in sydney CBD and walk around all day from client to client) and get paid a extra 13K, which i took simply because it will cost me $28 for a weekly rail ticket and I already have a soarer in the garage so there is no point of having another car sitting in the driveway. I also get a mobile phone which is fully paid for.

I drive a VY dunnydore S (it has a SC). This thing costs me $16K per year which is taken out of my salary.
It equates to approx $190 per week after tax.
It's fully maintained with 24hr on road assistance.
not bad considering cost of fuel.
But as David said it is fairly boring to drive after a while.
It all depends what sort of money they will take off your package for the car.

Well I do need a car for work, as quite often, large items need carrying. The Soarer is probably not the best car for this...running costs quite high, as well as space is not ideal. I would hazard a guess I would not have an option of cars, and it would be a large station-wagon type car.

Also, I would probably be covering a reasonably large area, so walking is again, not really an option.

Hopefully I will get a return call soon, and will find out from the horse's mouth.

Oh, and thanks for the well wishes David :-)

Thanks mate, and will do :-)

Steven - just out of curiosity, how do you do workshop repairs on copiers? Transported back to your workshop?
I'm just interested, as we hardly ever get a copier back to the workshop....99% onsite

But, I'm not a copier tech at the moment. I do everything BUT copiers, anything found in the office, plus point of sale stuff, third party contract work, etc...

The job I applied for is as an ATM technician, something that I cover(ed) in my current job also....really like these machines too.
