Not good at all. We were to go up and meet him in a couple of weeks for some filming for his show too. Poor guy, but he did more to help out the plight of animals than he would have ever thought possible when he started off so good on him.

Devestating news, he is an awesome guy to say the least. Definately saddened my afternoon. I have been to his zoo and followed him for some years now. The work he has done for the wildlife of this country, and in particular Crocodiles and the rehabilitation and care of them in this country is outstanding. I hope that his family carries on the awesome work that he has achieved......

Omg... This is so Strange. Earlier today I was watching Crocodile Hunter, An episode where he was with Spitting cobra snakes that kept spitting at him etc and I though geeze its actually amazing hes still alive with all the dangerous things he does... Then I look on SC in the off topic post and see this post about him being dead! How bizzare!!! Especially since the show I was watching was on at 2pm and at the same time in Australia, he died apparently at 11pm!!
Still very sad news indedd, Steve was an Australian icon when you think about it, terrible loss.

We just watched his show on saturday I think it was where he said his greatest fear was that a croc or something would get him and then people would say "ha! thats why they should be killed off where people live" (or words to that effect). And people give him heaps for being over the top but thats the point I guess. I don't think some bland knob standing there waffling on would have captured the worlds attention as he has.

Crikey, this comes as a bit of a shock!! I agree with your comment, Perry. His "over the top" personality and fearless attitude sure caught people's attention.
I hope that there is someone out there that will stand up and be able to do as much for the animal kingdom as he has done. Very sad news.

Totally agree here too. Im certain that this very sad news isnt only in australia but all over the world by now. The word crickey shall never be taken in vain!!! Sure he was over the top but i guess thats why people payed so much attention to him he was out there and enthusiastic about his work. What a bloddy champion!!!!

dude, sorry but i really dont find it funny at all. At least he didnt die in a bloody hospital bed, he actually died doing what he does best and more importantly what he loves.

I think I heard someone say on the news that it was such a freak accident, that in the past 10 years there were only 2 other deaths by stingrays, they are not an aggressive creature. How rare is this sad death! Unreal..

I can't belive it as well I thought it was a joke when I heard Steve (Crikey) Irwin was dead. Now not only have we lost one of Australia's leading and most passionate conservationist how the bloody hell am I supposed to be able to laugh at his mug on tv anymore. One things for sure is that he has left big boots for someone to fill, I mean for a start you try coming up with a better catch cry then "Crikey" even though using it to and describe this tragic event would be an understatement. My thoughts are with his wife and kids and family,What A Sad Day R.I.P STEVE I now announce that 4 of september every year should be Steve Irwin Day

If your in the same time zone as Sydney on the ABC, they are replaying an interview with Steve Irwin that Andrew Denton did, may be worth a watch if you haven't already seen it!!

My condolences to his family and friends.. however i find it a little off putting when the death of a single celebrity (sure an important and top bloke) is celebrated (in the appropriate sense!) more than an airplane crash or other mass loss of life.

Personally I think he was a great man who changed the world, and so well worth pausing to consider who he was and what he stood for. Far more meaningful to me than say, Princess Di's death was (not that she didn't do a lot to improve the world too... just that Steve was a far more real person, he was what he was and we loved him for it).

Callum that's the way journalism works. There's even a formula that goes something like: 1 Australian = 100 Americans = 10000 Africans. News is made by a variety of factors, proximity often the most important. In this case we have proximity and celebrity which makes it huge, not to mention curiousity because of the way he died.

It still doesn't seem real, such a shock and so very sad. I just got back from working in the USA and didn't realise how popular he was there, nearly every American knew who the Crocodile Hunter was. I was asked if Aussies were just like him and they all knew crikey..I would always get a laugh when I said it. Ironically, last week, an American workmate said that Steve Irwin wouldn't live much longer as he took too many risks. I replied with..nahhh mate, he won't, he knows what he is doing, he is virtually indestructible. I really believed he was and I don't think I was alone in that thought. My Aussie replacement said that Steve Irwin wasn't popular in Australia at all...how wrong he was.
