Hi guys,

I bought a set of 20 inch chrome rims that fit on my soarer. However my problem is as follows:

My car is fitted with Bilstein struts but i need new springs for all 4 wheels. How low can i go on 20's? If i buy the King Springs with 30mm lowered is that going to be a problem?

Also, currently the car had been lowered with the bad springs and it was sitting on 18 inch Lenso rims. When i took the front wheel off (RHF) i noticed that the plastic cover around wiring to the engine was starting to be eaten away. Obviously the car was rubbing slightly on 18s, but i wasnt sure if that was because of the bad springs or just the ride height.

Anyone know about wheels?

Cheers,
Nik

Changing wheel diameter makes no difference to ride height if you buy the right tyres. Total wheel/tyre circumference remains about the same and must, to be legal.

However, if you lower the car (springs) too far, especially with wide wheels, you will have the famous problem where you cut essential wires, as you have already started to notice. Use Search and you will find plenty of other discussion of this topic and problem.

Hey Nick,

a little off topic here, but:

regarding the King Springs... is 30mm the lowest you can get ??

I was trying to get 30s for the front a 50s for the back but REPCO said they didnt stock 50mm ones...

Lower the car and the front wheel will chew the wiring loom in the front guard.

Can i protect the loom casing in any way to prevent chewing?

Maybe reroute the wires?

Cheers,

Nik

Also if Im only lowering 30mm on King Springs with the adjustable Bilstein shocks will this still be too low?

Nik, you can re-route the wires. There was a thread about it a few months back. You will still probably experience the grinding noise of plastic being chewed away under full lock though.

Any pics of the wheels mate? Hardly anyone bothers with 20's these days.

These are the rims i have. They came off a lowered s2000 so i figured that if they drove alright on that little thing they would be fine for my soarer but maybe not could someone please advise?

Nik - Cheers for the link mate, ive sent them an email asking about some 38mm fronts and some 50mm rears.

Wonder if they have the same kinda stiffness as other springs

Yeah let me know James because ill buy a set too.

But apparently i might have to just stick with the 30mm lowered standard springs because everyone is telling me i cant lower it further with 20's!

I've got mine on 20 inch rims with stock guard lining in the front. Scrubs it a bit over big bumps and on full lock but I've had them on there for a while and it hasn't touched the wiring.

Front is lowered about 3inches, back is lowered 3.75" inches.

Heres a pic

What sort of struts and springs are you using though?

Standard struts? I wouldnt have thought so.

And the brand of springs? I think if i get just 3 inch all round lowered springs it should be ok
