Wife ahd suspension checked and was told front ball joints need replacing. Can I check it myself easily before forking out the big bucks for the lower control arm?

Jack up car, grab wheel, one hand at the top, the other at the bottom, try and wiggle wheel with a reasonable amount of force. If it moves AT ALL then something needs replacing, most likely said balljoint. You can usually see where the movement is pretty easily if you turn the wheel so you can see the suspension while you are wiggling.
Alternatively get the shop that did the suspension check to show you what they are talking about. Its very easy for them to do, and any movement is unacceptable.

many thanks
By then way I heard that there is a company that reconditions ball joints without removing them. they pump a special plastic in - gives about 2 - 5 years extra life.
Has anyone tried it?

I did and seems they will recon a ball joint using the technology @ $80 a pop. Turnaround in a day but you need to send the strut to them. I want to check my ball joints myself before setting a time to have strut removed, ball joints urethaned and the lower control bushes vlammed. I was just wondering if anyone has had their ball joints done like this. Certainly promises to save a fortune.
