My diff is being rebuilt but the bearings can only be sourced from Japan at this point. ( in Perth ) The guy at Perth Diff and Gearbox is still looking around but he has only had positive results from the dealers. My issue with this is the lead time from Japan. Does anyone know where they might be available sooner?

Tom, what where the symptoms of your diff problem. mine has a noise coming from that area have had a couple of people tell me it was tyres but $500 for two new tyres and complete wheel alignment later the noise is still there.

Neil, James found me ( his boss had the number as James was not there when I first rang.) Thanks for you're help, the deal is now done.
Rod, There has been a rythmic faint scraping noise a bit like when you would be machining a disc if you know what that would sound like, for a while. I don't know if this was part of the issue but my diff actually gave a loud thump a couple of times, luckily when I was turning into my street so I parked it and there it has stayed. It is possible the scraping noise was from the diff bearings as when my diff was opened there was metal everywhere. The surprising thing is that the diff was still working with quite a few teeth chewed out and the only reason it made the thump was when a small bit of metal got caught up in the crown wheel. It all depends on what the noise sounds like, the only time I have heard tyre noise that could be something else is when particular tread patterns impact the road it can sound like a worn wheel bearing. However when a bearing gets to making this noise it usually worsens relatively quickly. If you suspect you're diff, drain it and check the oil for solids as a start. My diff performed without complaint and much like an LSD even though it looks as though half its teeth had been pulled by a mad dentist and only a minor drift in the wet followed by a hard left brought it undone.

Tom I rang james and he gave me the number for the diff guys you are using in Belmont so I will see if they can help. This noise has been there for more than 12 months and I was waiting for it to worsen so I could find out what the hell it is. I did kiss a kerb(Roundabout to fast & to wet) just before it started and the left hand seal n the diff has wept slightly. I have replaced both front Wheel bearings which were fine when I got them off. None of the back wheel or diff bearings have been done though. If anybody has any ideas on what it could be please let me know as its beyond P*ssing me of now, I just want it fixed.

Now that's scary, The noise in mine showed up after I "kissed a gutter" on a roundabout too only this was a 3 entrance exit roundabout and I went in faster than normal to avoid stopping was never an issue previously until I took my eyes of the traffic and faced forward again and "what the" is the exit doin all the way round there. The car came from Japan with Teins and a few other bits n pieces so it would have had no trouble with the situation if I hadn't been caught of guard and instinctively grabbed the brakes too hard. That was a little over 18 months ago also and I too was waiting for it to make it's cause known as it had no other effect on the car than to annoy although it was getting slightly louder towards the end. I'll know in a week or so if the diff was the issue.( assuming the diff comes back raring to go with it's new torsen center by then)

Tom, Did you mention your old diff was an LSD item as mine is as well. I have one of the rare as rocking horse sh*t auto LSD so I want to keep it LSD. I will take it to the guys in belmont as I think it could be a similar problem. Thanks mate you could have just saved my sanity.

Dunno yet I told James if the diff place wanted me to pay direct to let me know, haven't heard from him so I'll find out eventually. I should have asked but I was just happy to be able to say James -- Delvin (diff guy) Delvin -- James, James has what you need for my diff be happy and productive together. Then I just sat back with a contented smile coz the end was in sight ( cars been on stands for 2 months now )
