My UZZ31 over the last week has developed an 'interesting' knocking type noise from the front right. It's hard to pin down the pattern however I've deduced the following:

1. It definitely seems to be coming from the front right area.
2. It makes almost a "perculating" knocking noise which is intermittent.
3. It can occur concurrently when going over a bump but not always (ie: sometimes happens without a bump, but does seem more common where a bump in the road is present)
4. Turning tends to produce a louder single clunk almost like bad bushes or ball joint (But both have been checked and are fine and this doesn't happen always when turning).

Took it to Joe Hollywood in Perth. He was a bit perplexed with it also and thought it may have been the sway bars. Anyway he had it up on the hoist checked for anything loose and proceeded to tighten up everything and anything he could see (As there was nothing obviously wrong that he could see).

Now the 'perculating knocking' is significantly less frequent but the more louder single knocks are more frequent.

It's almost as if that something Joe has tightened still has some play and when it slips it now makes the louder knock noise....Problem is he tighten just about everything (about a 1/4 turn on average with nothing obviously loose) so we are none the wiser on where the culprit is.

It is going back to him next Friday for more diagnosis. however I'd thought i'd post up here in case someone has come across something similar....?

At the moment I know he checked and tightened the top suspension nuts, brake callipers, swaybars, control arms and any other visible parts under the front.

Any ideas?

Not the suspension compressor, loose or broken mount(s)?

Have you had a wheel alignment done since you've had it? As years ago I had one done and a loud annoying knocking appeared afterwards. Took it back to the place and they up sold me some new shocks saying my Bilstiens were worn????

Took the bilsteins to WA susp to get a second opinion as the noise didn't disappear, and they were fine.

Went back for the third time got a refund, re-installed the old shocks, back tracked their wheel alignment found something they did wrong, fixed it and noise was gone!

The noise was a noticeable clunk turning left or right up the slightest of curbs or bumps.

Hope this my be of help.

Are the engine and trans mounts OK? I've had similar noises in a Xj6 with stuffed engine mounts which in turn was causing the exhaust to knock against the body, mostly during acceleration, but also when turning and going over bumps.

Thanks guys for taking the time to provide some suggestions. All good ones I might add!.... I will investigate further however this morning on the drive in (45mins) the knocking has ceased!...

I don't like noises that are prevalent and then vanish....grrrr gremlins....So I'll have to wait and see if it re-establishes itself for further diagnosis....

Thanks for the input though, I'll certainly follow these suggestions through...

Cheers

Gregg I know this was a while ago but did you reach an outcome with this or has anyone with a similar issue have any comments?

I have this sound now, only when going over bumps. I'd describe it more like a knocking but I'd swear it's the same thing.

I was wondering if I brought it on after I started running my 235/40/R18's at 40psi (cold). I have replaced my LCA bushes and had a second hand steering rack put on. I have not had a wheel alignment as yet. (I have TEMS). No visible issues. Will be looking more into the engine & trans mounts. Comments / ideas appreciated !

Check the sway bar mounts to the chassis.
