Hey guys,

Looking at getting some new wheels tomorrow and they just touch the brake caliper. Need to move them out a few mm.

So i was wondering if spacers are illegal or legal in SA?

Or if there is anything else to make more room behind the rim legally?

Spacers would be the only way, but I doubt they are legal.

How much does it touch?

I think we used two washer either 2-3mm each to clear from scraping.

If they are illegal would the washers still be safe?

washer... damn that is the mos dangerous this i have ever heard of. It they are brand new rims get a refund. Bloody rip of merchants, i they dont know how to order the correct rims they shouldnt be in business

If the spacers are hub centric then they arent that bad either, but like 99% of idiots they dont get hub centric ones.

I would ditch the rims and buy some proper jap rims that have a good offset :-)

I have a set of Work Wheels which I purchased because they listed the Soarer and were a reasonable offset. +30 and +38.

When they arrived it was obvious that they aren't hubcentric so I had to call the supplier and request hubcentric rings.

I ran them without rings and they provided quite a bit of vibration. The rings sorted that.

Just a note to all about spacers , if you drill and tap the hub and put two countersunk screws in they are not spacers anymore as they are autually attached .
That's why disc's that just locate on the wheel studs have two screws holding them in place , because otherwise technically they would be spacers also .

My Supra TT rotors do not have any screws bolting them to the hubs.

I had a BMW 325i once and had alloy wheels fitted. They did not quite clear the calipers, so the mechanic applied an angle grinder to the offending bits of metal on the caliper. Was only a few mm, but it did the trick. Now I am sure there are horrific implications in doing this, but I'd rather do that than add washers or spacers.

The wheels were second hand, have not bought them, were on a V8 soarer and fit with the smaller brakes.

I have decided against getting them as they will void my insurance.

Also i'm not a fan of using an angle grinder on any part of my car.

It is a huge shame though as they were almost perfect condition with nice lip.

Just change over to V8 brakes. I'm sure one of the V8 boys would be happy to trade with you

both type of spacers are illegal, if you were going to get some hub centric ones buy some decent ones that aren't Chinese. But if you get the spacer plates 3mm is the max width you want to run anything bigger than that is dangerous unless you get extra long studs.
