Ok I jacked my car up today and spun the wheels and both wheels turned in the same direction. I could only rotate them twice before they basically jammed up, if i pulled real hard I could get past the lockup. Also after one revolution it would clunk but not lockup. Now the clunking noise sounds like it's coming from further up the drive train, about the middle of the car. Could it be a drive shaft coupling or something else? I have no real idea what's in that area and what the weak links are. Is there anything else I can do to diagnose the problem? Cheers.

I have an auto. So I guess the noise is resonating up the drive train because it doesn't sound like it's coming from there. My mate told me to remove the tail shaft, then spin the wheels. I'm going to try that now. Cheers matt.

Start looking for a second hand diff, anything will get you going. Swap the diff over then pull yours down to see what has failed.
Seb I have to agree with Matt. (if funds allow).

Pull the diff plug, and check it for any metal filings. If the diff. centre has shat it's self there could be metal filings stuck to the sungear/ringgear,(I don't know if this is the right description, help me out Matt) which will cause a clunk.

Thanks fellas, I think you're right about just swapping the diff over etc. Just hate doing things twice but I guess it's the only way to go. I thought K Rudd was buying me a new intercooler but I guess he thinks I should invest in a new diff instead. Cheers.

Ok I swapped my diff out with an open wheeler and opened it up and it appears that the pinion gear has finally given up the ghost but my centre APPEARS to be ok. I am going to take it to diff technics in kogarah to have a look at it. Should I just buy another open diff and swap centres? My mate says I should reco the centre as well. Has anyone done this before or should I just buy a new centre. Cheers.

A complete stock torsen 2nd hand goes for about $700. You have no idea how long it will last and finding one is very difficult. I can put my centre into a open diff which is what I'll probably do but I'm just wondering if its worth reconditioning my centre while it's out.
