I've just been quoted $250 each for KYB shocks for my JZZ-31. This seems rather excessive to me, having seen lower prices bandied about for better shocks like Bilstein. Anyone have any ideas or contacts? I'm wanting to retain close to normal comfort and handling characteristics (and definitely not lowered:-)!)

Cheers,
Mike

Mike, I replaced the front shocks on our Soarer with BRAND NEW KYB's for a paltry $38.76(NZ) EACH.

It was a mates rates deal through B n' T Automotive here in New Plymouth (I got 50% discount!, Yay me).

Installed myself with the aid of a spring-compressor in around 2.5 hours for both sides, inclusive of coffee & fag time

I did price em genuine through Tasman Toyota, and was pleasantly surprised at $104.83(NZ).

I suggest checking with a Toyota dealer over there, OR give the boys at Tasman Toyota a call.

The part number for your front shocks is: 48510- 29515 for the standard & lux-pac.

If ya wanna put the slightly firmer "S" pac ones in. the part number is: 48510- 29505

RH & LH are the same obviously.

Thanks, Don. I was rather shocked to see $250 EACH for KYB from a mob in Qld who supposedly handle lotsa imports. They asked for photos of both shocks as well! This meant the jacking up wheel removing gig I try to avoid. At least I got to paint a caliper I'd put off for ages.

Don't think I'll be doing the shock work myself, I've done it before but the fingers don't work as well as I'd like (arthritis...bloody old age sh!t).

I'm sure Tasman Toyota would love to do business with me again, but freight would be a killer to WA! It was different on Norfolk, of course. The part nos will be handy when talking to a Toyota dealer over here of course. They're about the only sort of dealer we have in the outback (well, there are the odd Ford and Holden dealers... but who cares about them:-)?).

I take it those nos are alternatives for front only? The "S-pack" sound good, will go well with my "G-Pack":-)

Indeed they are.

Mike, can you post up your chassis number so I can load it into the EPC as I don't have an 8/96 on, JZZ31 model loaded into the system.

The KYB part number(s) for front & rear shocks for your Soarer are:

341161 Front & 341162 rear. You will find them perfect for your requirements.

I'd ring round a few places like Repco, SuperCheap etc, and quote the KYB part number(s)

You'll find em a LOT cheaper.

I suspect the dude was trying to flog you some up-spec super swish KYB's, rather than the oe replacement gas ones.

Incidentally, Tokico made the original Toyota shocks.
Tokico part numbers are Front: HU3452 & Rear: HU3453

Don, our chassis no. is: JZZ31-1001813. Posted this yesterday but my post got lost for some reason.

We have a Repco agent in town so I'll try them Monday.

Thanks again:-)

Don, those KYB part nos are for the GR-2 shock, which is "midrange" in quality, and is in fact I think the only KYB available for the Soarer/SC300.

I see them on Ebay for a tad over AUD400 posted from US for set of 4. Slightly more for Tokico.

Prices for Bilstein appear very good in US but sc300/400 not listed. I believe you can fit them but modified from the Supra ones- probably in coilover form only.

Mike,

You'd might like to check out Greenline Motorsports, they might be able to get you some KYBs specifically for the Soarer.

The Bilsteins are Supra specific, I think the fronts can still use a Soarer spring, but the rears need the Supra-specific spring.

Thanks for the offer, Dave, but I don't drive hard enough (nor do we have enough bends locally) to warrant expenditure like that. I'm also happy with the present ride height. It's scary enough think about running over dead roos at the present height (and there are heaps of them...my other car's in currently having the damage from two hits (live ones!)fixed.

Yeah, that'd be right Mike.

I found them to be perfect for all round use, and obviously well priced.
